I'm outraged.

How can a man with a history of violence...a history of asssulting his family and even police officers...and a history of mental problems be allowed to roam the streets, eventually shooting and killing a police officer..(allegedly).

As we've seen in the video during his court appearance earlier this week, Timothy Halton Jr has some serious problems.

The man was a ticking time-bomb,  even his mother says she feared the day he would assult a police officer and be shot and  killed.  Well he's still alive, but he shot and killed a police officer. (allegedly)

It seems the system has failed.

Why wasn't Halton on his medication...and why was he not committed to a mental institution..?

Its the because the state has closed those facilities, leaving the mentally ill to fend for themselves, sometimes at our expense.

Unfortunately nothing can bring Officer Jason West back to life...but this tradegy should put us on notice.  How may other Timothy Halton's are out there just waiting to explode..?

Who else is at risk..?

Something needs to be done to not only treat the violentally mentally ill...but to get them off of the streets.

This task should not just rest with the families.

That's my opionion...what's you're...?

I totally agree with you Wayne. If Fairhill was still open, alot of these individuals would have the proper help they need. Our system is failing us, and then innocent individuals are at stake because of this. If we show no respect to the police, who do we expect to protect us?

If we put everybody that has a mental problem away, there will be no room to house everyone...and when you're mentally ill, you really think there is nothing wrong with you...our justice system is out of date, corrupt, and politically inclined...to move up in the world..this isn't the first and won't be the last.

i feel for the officers family. the idiot that did the crime had to show himself on tv. he will plead being insane and be sent to a hospital. oh! look i am better and they will let him out. then he can hurt someone else. he can tell his mother he has another list he needs to get done.

Haven't you learned yet that society and the courts dont care about these people that commit a crime, they dont enforce the law, they make is easier for them to break the law rather than to look out for the public and its sad that this is the way our country is and I dont see it changing at all. I have no trust or faith in the court system, never have and never will.

In far to many cases we are an " after the fact " society. We wait until something breaks before we fix it, or attempt to fix it. The majority of our police officers are hard working, risk taking men and women who deserve our respect and support. This is probably not an exceptional story, I'm sure one that many families deal with. Lets take steps to help protect the people who protect and serve us. Like we yellow tag repeat drunk drivers can we not tag the homes of those with mentally ill people living on the premise? Not to be offensive, but it may help the police, nieghbors, children in the area. Any little step to let someone know they are entering what might possibly be a dangerous situation. This does not solve the problem and would certainly be difficult for some families to comprehend being " labeled " but just a simple warning until other measures can be taken. Its just a baby step in a mile walk, but for officers like Mr. West we need to start somewhere. It could have easily been the family next doors two small kids, Mr West, and the mailman.

i agree with you wayne. i think that help needs to be provided for these families. its not easy to help someone who thinks nothing is wrong with them.

There is no punishment that we could come up with that would really be acceptable for this"person"....If this person has mental problems in a few week's he will be mentally stable an saying his sorries. Well sorry didn't do it. This does nothing to help the loss that Officer West's family is going through. My condolence's to the family...
The Rose.
