i am a school board member and while we have a no tolerance policy as well,  i would hope and expect  that if faced with similar situation as a child eating with a  sharp knife,  a principal would use common sense, take the child and knife and call the parents NOT the cops for pete sakes. use common sense!!    why tramatize a child over what i am sure they thought was an innocent action,  thinking that she might need to cut her meat, and brought a sharp knife to school.  yea it was stupid, but that is what kids are a lot of times!  they do not think!  give them a break and then maybe wont be so many that buck the system

it is over reactions such as this that give schools and law enforcement a bad name, all because someone  doesnt use common sense when dealing with a situation such as this

I missed the part where it said exactly what
type of knife it was. For all we know, she
could've been cutting her knife with a Rambo
knife.

yeah rambo knife would be a little over kill but still a child sitting eating her lunch for pete's sake! i know my child would be tramatized if taken by cops etc. schools need to use common sense and deal with some of these minor issues on their own, not just dump it on police and a system that is already overburdened by frivolous/minor cases.

Well. I guess that because of all the killings that has been within our schools, I feel that maybe they do not want to take the chance on being killed. The mouth that these kid have on them today get them in trouble. I am sure that this young lady may have gotten really smart mouth with the teacher, which made her take the situation a bit further then need be. The law now states that any kind of weapon is to be reported. This matter will clear itself up within the meeting that follows!

steak or butter knife, how old was the child? this is a rediculous as that kindergartener that brought toy gun to school, they treated him like he was holding people hostage, common sense, and age appropriate decisions should be made while evaluating the situation before blowing things out of perportion

I agree that it should have been handled by the school. I realy don't think this child should be charged with a crime. This little girl is a 4th grader, so I assume she is about 9 or 10 years old. She should have KNOWN better. School violance is on the rise as is teen violance. Yes this child is young, but so was the 13 yr old boy who stole a car and ran down that woman in downtown.
It is sad that we have to teach such young children what is and isn't allowed.
Although again, I do agree that the school and parents should be the ones to handle this situation.

This is a child in elementary school who took a steak knife to school to cut a steak she was having for lunch.

This is a child in elementary school who I am sure she did not connect the same dots that adults do on this issue. It appears the entire situation was innocent and the school official over reacted.

I think simply talking to the child and her parents would have handled the situation.

We our kids to be safe in school but we also do not want to tramatize them. This child was also suspened for 10 days.

I agree, but don't you think in this day and age that parents should be talking to their kids. I would tell my 4th grader that if she sees anyone at school with a gun or knife to go straight to an adult. Sadly, kids have to grow up way too fast.
And yes, the parents should be the ones to handle it.

The people who called the police should be fired and have all benefits cut off- they have shown that they are lacking in judgment and good sense.

I have a Zero Tolerance for things like rape- but most things do not call for a zero tolerance policy.

Tolerance can be a good thing if exercised by a person with good judgment and sense.

Thier needs to be zero tolerance on weapons in schools. Granted, this child did not intend for it to be used as a weapon, but parents need to inform thier children. If this little girl would have stabbed fellow class mates you would be hearing outraged people yelling why didn't anyone do anything about this. The law does NOT need to be involved.
Maybe this is the school's opportunity to outline for students and parents what is acceptable and what is not.
Like I said, the boy who stole the car and hit and killed the woman in downtown Cleveland was only 13 years old.

there needs to be zero tolerance with common sense used in ALL situations. No one is saying she shouldnt be disciplined, just that the school officials over reacted by calling cops and hauling this poor 4th grader to a juvenle detention place when they could/should have just held her in office until parents came and then dealt with the situation and suspended her for an amount of time. this way the parents and child learn about zero tolerance and seriousness of taking any sort of knife to school with out terrorizing the child and causing a family heartache for a stupid but innocent mistake.

See if we go back to discpline and allowing teachers to spank, yes I said spank...problem resolved...teachers are afraid to touch a child like alot of parents...sooo the best thing is too call the police...unless you have been involved with a school system you have no idea...when i was in school we all as kids had pocket knifes and played mummble peg...a knife game....how this world has gotten sooo screwed up because, just because...parents are too blame because they are so protective of thier childs....their my baby does no wrong childs..bull S_ _ _ !!!

"there needs to be zero tolerance with common sense used in ALL situations."-Udderlady

Zero tolerance is NOT common sense.

Common sense is common sense.

The problem with this particular instance is that the school actually enforced zero tolerance
