The story about the boy who was told to color in the part on his head was INSANE.  I am on a school board and  If I was in that school district I would be at the  next board meeting calling for the job of whoever made that call!  USE COMMON SENSE!!!  My God,  kids are bringing guns to school and this person was worried about a boys part!!!!  that is totally crazy!    Get the priorities straight!,  teach the kids quit badgering them for petty things!!   If they worried half as much about their test scores etc as they did this kids part and other petty things , then maybe this school would be really excelling!

I agree that was crazy. However the problem is that the next kid would have a slight zig or something in his hair and before you know it it would be out of control. It's sad the schools have to go to a no common sense status but I believe it's because of the sue happy no common sense parents.

I agree with utter insanity of this act. I definately think they should call for their jobs. They should try teaching more Christian values and learning some themselves. Believe me, they talk a good game at VASJ, but don't live these Christian values that they teach. I applaud this mother for taking a stand. Her son was very neat and this was not a head carving, just a part. I guess every part on an african american is considered a head carving. Unbelievable.

When I was in school we tried to grow our hair long [ HIPPY DAYS] and they would send you home or take you for a haircut. no hair over your ears or in your eyes. I always tried to push the rule and didn't think my hair was a big deal. Now I'm just glad to have some.

crazy crazy crazy...

i am a high school teacher and i feel that it is shameful that a school is not allowing students come to school with unconventional hairdos. in the fifties, it was D.A. haircuts and beehives. in the 60's, it was long beetle cuts and fros. in the 70's, it was long hair, fros , mohawks and beards. in the 80's it was mohawks and weirds colored hair. in the 90's it was big hair, punker looks and shaved heads and sculpted do's... my point is...hair styles are JUST HAIR ! even if the older crowd does not understand the fashion, fashion is just that...style. what difference does it make if a person has a crew cut or a pink mohawk? is this going to make them not learn? let it be...at least the kids are coming to school... that school's administration and school board is ineffective and out of touch. they should work WITH their students' diversity not against it. that's what they teach us in teacher school.

THE KIDS ARE COMING TO SCHOOL. why don't we want them there? because they have a hair do that we don't understand? with a drop-out rate as high as it is, we should encourage kids to come to school even if they have to come with bedperms and in their pajamas.

i am bald. if i could, i would have every hairdo possible...just because i could. those of you with hair: ENJOY IT, DANG IT !! HAVE FUN WITH IT !!!! do it for me, eh?
hair today gone tomorrow.

The boy has a single line where a hair part would be. How silly to make a federal case out of this. Give the boy a break and let him back in the school, and stop being so silly!!!

I'm glad that my rainbow bright hair that I had back in high school and college didn't get me in trouble LOL...

I really think that the schools have better things to worry about than a part in a students hair.

I think it was really stupid also! If I was his mom I'de be upset to. I feel its no different that any other part in someone elses hair! I mean its not like he had dollar signs or something ridiculous shaved into his hair!

The principal seems to streatch the school dress code to her own personal interpretation concerning hair. Kids have been wearing parts in their hair for many years. I wonder where this principal went to school. I am glad that the students mother transferred him to another school and I feel confident that he will succeed. She needs to have a reallity check.

oops...bad editing caused me to type that big hair was in the 90's...although some peopleclung to this style, it's more noted that it was the 80's...my apologies to those who fact check.

I wonder what types of haircuts the faculty has.

Rules are rules. Mom and child needs to sit down and read the school handbook together.

I'm sure they created these rules because they had trouble with black kids in the first place. I managed kids in a predominately black law enforcement district for 5 years, and if you don't keep your thumb on the the black kids all the time, they turn sour on you quick, and disrupt the educational/legal process.

I guess you might call it "colored student management", and it seriously smacks of so-called "racism", it is true and necessary. Governing black kids requires exceptions and a heavy hand simply because their culture is heavy handed and animalitsic by nature. Black families beat their kids as a matter of course, hence the whole "disrespecting" thing.

Sad, but true...

First of all, Johnny you are a racist sack of BLEEP, but I won't get into that now.

My response: I think this whole thing is insane, I saw the principle on the news and I think she is full of it and should be fired. As a student, I think most of the dress code rules are pointless. I understand certain things like not exposing certain parts of the body, but hair, come on. I don't find any hair style distracting. I feel the same about pants. At my school(I won't name for obvious reasons) you get in trouble for holes in pants. I don't see how pants with ripped knees are distracting, I'm not distracted. Just like how time is wasted in class to check pants and for ''illegal'' flip flops. I think the schools should be happy that kids are COMING to school, instead of finding ways to send them home.

floraT I am also on a school board and know our student handbook but in no way would have considered a tiny little line on a kids head as a carving! they needed to use COMMON SENSE!!! What about kids who have scars on their heads?? have seen some squiggly ones on almost shaved heads, actually similar to this boy, should they color theirs scars in too???? some people are so worried about following the rules that THEY put in place that they do not use common sense or sound judgement.

It's tragic that political "correctness" does not allow officials (those who are down and dirty in school with colored kids) from telling the simple, observational truth, and it helps no one in the short, or long run.

Black kids are bestial and unruly, and white teachers and white law enforcement have to recieve speicla education classes just to deal with them. They are special little "challenges", and have to be assigned unusual treatment and leniancy because of it.

Folks, wake up. "Racism" if you are stupid enough, or simply brainwashed enough, to call it that. is real.

I'll say again- what about all the successful African American doctors, lawyers, journalists and other successful professions? Are they also ''bestial'' and ''unruly''? I'm well aware that racism is real, everyone here is, you put enough of it into your comments.

What do you want from me? It's clear that you are trying to convince yourself, not me, as you had mentioned before you are gay, and seek indenity with "oppressed minorties" such as blacks.

The white man made you, the white man can break you, ant any time, without warning. Deal.

What do you want FROM ME? You make an account with a name similar to mine(polabear_88) and post racist comments and call me gay. It's like I'm talking to a little kid, doesn't your mommy want you to be in bed before 1AM, Johnny? You are nothing but a sad man with no life, Johnny. Now excuse me, I'm signing off the idiot box and getting back to my REAL life!

I don't understand this. IF it was more than ONE line- like some kind of wacked out design (or bad words) with multi colors or whatever then I might possibly understand. But it's ONE line= a part in his hair. To me he looked very neat and respectable and I wish more kids looked that good. Our student handbooks also state No wild hair colors, cut-in designs, mohawks etc.and things like that. But this boy has done nothing wrong IMO.

If his mother may read this... I think your son looked very respectable. I seen what they said the rules are but he only had one line and to me you could hardly see it. It was well done and shame on the school for treating him like they did. We are disgusted on how your son was treated.
