How horrible is has to be for the families to wait to see if their loved ones are still alive or not. Our prayers are with all of them. I could not stand to be trapped live they are in that mine (or any where). I can't stand to be closed in nor can I go without something to drink for very long. Both of those things would make me want to die. My heart really goes out to these miners. In my book if they are alive, they are my heroes.

Praying for the miners will not prevent these terrible accidents, many of which can be prevented with tough safety rules enforcement.

In February 1st of 2006, Democratic Senator Robert Byrd introduced a bill called S.2231 to prescribe additional tougher coal mine safety standards and require additional penalties for habitual violators. Cosponsors of the bill were Dick Durbin (D), Ted Kennedy (D), Barack Obama (D)

Many conservatives and Republicans opposed this type of legislation, as they still do now because it costs money, and money is more important to Republicans than the lives of U.S. coal miners.
Their True God is Mammon!

Let's make sure we do something to stop this from happening in the future by getting our state legislature and our Reps in the U.S. House and Senate to vote for the safety of U.S. Coal Miners, instead of sitting around praying (which will do nothing but make us feel like were contributing, but is actually part of the problem!) We need real solutions, not magic! We need to solve our own problems and not look for an imaginary being in the sky to solve our problems for us.

Contact your Representatives today and DEMAND they vote for this important legislation!

I guess everyone has their own opinion. You have your belief and I have mine. I am a very proud believer in my Lord and Savior. I am also a very proud ultra conservative Republican. I don't rely on any man to do the work of God. Yes man can help to prevent accidents, it's called common sense that God gave us. No Bills or Legislation is going to protect anybody. It is nothing more than a piece of paper. Paper can never replace common sense. Because it doesn't matter weather it is initiated by Republicans or Democrats, if nobody enforces all of these laws and regulations they are as worthless as the paper they are written on. Yes we do need real solutions to the problems that plague our world today. I know how corrupt the law is. I have witnessed many events first hand. It doesn't matter what race, religion, political party they vote for, their education or any personal traits, I have witnessed this from all walks of life. Everybody seems to get such pleasure out of pointing fingers at those who they disagree with. Of course it is their fault. I don't see it that way. If you are a thief, liar or a cheat then that is what you are. You can't change the facts by saying well he is a Democrat so he can't be a thief. Get real. People are who they are. And you have the right to your opinion, that doesn't mean I have to agree with you any more than you are required to believe how I believe. Good luck with your propaganda. I will continue to pray to my God and pray for you before it's to late for you. I know you didn't ask me to do that and probably don't want me to.

The miners are aware that they have a very dangerious job, in some cases itis a family tradition. They are trained and prepare for something to happen. I prsy that they are safe, not loosing hope. They know that there friends are coming after them, no matter what. They will get them out.
The attempt is reasure them is way ahead of schedule and the determination of the rescue crew is wonderful.
It is a shame that the politicians and their Domeocrate/republican differances have to play a roll, when the men are all that is important.

Miners need better safety laws/rules, not empty prayers. Even if there was a God, he/she would want human beings to do their own work, especially preventable accidents such as these.

This mine used a type of mining called Retreat Mining, and many experts say it is very dangerous and unecessary. The owner of the Mine Bob Murray has attempted to block BOTH new legislation and enforcement of existing rules, and those mens deaths are on his hands, and the hands of the elected and appointed officials in Utah.

People who vote for Small government conservatives do deserve some of the blame.

gorbash81, you can rest assured that my prayers are far from empty. They are heartfelt and sincere. I agree with the need for safer laws/rules. The problem is that when laws and rules are in place they are only as good as those who enforce them. Most of them are empty or do exist. Unfortunately accidents will happen even if laws are in place. Some of them by mistakes and some by ignorance/lack of commonsense. Lets just hope/pray that these men's lives will be spared and they will get home to their families. So until they are found they will be in my heartfelt and sincere prayers.

What is more fulfilling? Praying for someone to get better, or getting them medicine so they get better?

What makes more sense? Praying for school shootings to stop? Or supporting legislation and candidates that prevent the mentally ill and underage from attaining guns and weapons?

What is more logical? Putting a bumper sticker on your car supporting the troops? Or joining the Army and fighting it yourself, or protesting the war to bring them home?

Who's to say you can't do both??

You can, but only one actually does anything to solve the problem, and many who do pray do nothing else.

If all one does when a problem occurs is pray, then one deserves to have problems. Real problems require real answers.

Look at the media coverage of the Bridge Collapse, the Utah Mine collapse, the Sago Mine collapse, after each of these events the media only focused on people praying for things to get better, and guess what? They didn't get better! The media and our own selves need to focus on real world solutions.

I think perhaps people were praying that the lives of those involved in those catastrophies would be saved, not the fact that prayer would bring about resolution from these events not happening. People don't pray without reason. I do not pray that my home doesn't collapse on me, although I do pray that if it does, I am saved from harm. The answer for it not to collapse is to build it well. Common sense. And even then, tradgety can happen. And yes Gorbash, stricter laws may very well prevent some of these things from happening. All she is trying to say is that don't we also have legislation, laws, policies against rape and murder and drunk driving etc..? Just because there is a law against it or stricter rules doesn't mean it can't happen. Maybe less of a chance but just the same, it happens. Especially when you speak of people with the character of those that put money before life.

Voting and arguing about public policy does more good than praying. Being involved in our government is a more constructive use of time and energy than relying on the supernatural to save us from our own stupidity.

It is very obvious that you do not believe in God. For that I am very sorry. It is obvious that you have only man to put your faith in. I had a biology teacher just like you. My first husband is like you. Needless to say they lead a miserable life. I know, not every atheist leads a horrible live. Again you have a right to your opinion. I am very happy and content believing in my Lord and Savior. I can tell you that since I have had the Lord in my life things have greatly improved in my heart. No, these laws do not do anything for mankind that the Lord can't do. It is because we have been given the choice in how to believe that has an outcome in our lives. The Lord never promised that we will live perfect lives without problems. We will all have challenges until we die. It will be up to us as to the outcome. For me, I would die for my God. Most people who claim they don't believe in God never pray until their life or the life of someone they love is put on the line. If you don't have God in your heart you can't know what we are talking about. So for now you continue to put your faith in man and yourself and see how far that gets you.

Like I told my biology teacher, either you believe that you were created by God or your ancestors were monkeys like those choose to believe in evolution. I know for a fact my family is not apes. If that was the case then why do we have apes today along with man. There is no such thing. But if those choose to believe their families are apes then I guess that is their choice. Man can never do for you what God can.

Sweetamishbabe--Our DNA suggests that apes ARE very closely related to us....but that's a pissing match that will get us nowhere. Believe as you wish, and be happy.

Good thing this discussion stayed on topic, eh?

It's been almost a week now; I'm fearing the worst for these miners. Forget the oxygen for a moment, how much food and/or water could they possibly have down there?? Let's just hope for some closure for these families soon.
