Being in New England now for over 10 years, I have seen some of the most unpredictable weather anywhere...except along Lake Erie.
Of course, it really doesn't where I have lived in my life, when there is a watch or a warning being posted by the National Weather Service, there is a reason why they do so. Its not to inconvenience anyone, just the conditions are to where there is a strong possibility for a severe storm. However, you always have those who end up getting injured or die because they didn't take the necessary steps to protect themselves or others.
I know all the weather people that I have watched over the years do the normal speech to inform the public, but there are always those that don't listen and get hurt or worse. So please when there is a storm coming, be aware in what you should do so you don't get hurt.
During my vacation this week, my wife and I went on a day trip up to Mt. Washington. We took the auto road up to the summit and looked around. I found the weather aspect of the trip extremly facinating as it was windy and around 34 degrees on the summit. They have been monitoring weather patterns up there for over 100 years. Some of the highest winds ever recorded was at Mt. Washington. They have a museum in the main summit building with some of the different weather observations listed there. Also, they have a seperate Mt. Washington Weather Museum in North Conway on the main road (St. Route 16). By the way, when we started up the auto road the temperature was 63 degrees near the toll booth.
Finally...maybe nice weather

Weather
As I look out my front window listening to the Red Sox game on TV, I see very little snow left and that little thing called the sun peaking through the west windows. Of course, there is the normal Saturday traffic going up and down my street (I live on one of the main streets in Derry, NH). One of the interesting things I see is that people have their windows down in their cars and you don't see the heavy coats. After the normal Friday bad weather (it was a snow/rain mix), it should be a nice weekend weather wise here. I should be driving to Providence tomorrow with my window down and hopefully see one of the kids that played in Lewiston during their season playing for the Manchester Monarchs tomorrow. I'm going to see Manchester play Providence which could be a preview of a first round playoff series in the AHL Atlantic Division.

On the front page of yesterday's Sunday News from Manchester, NH., the major story was the amount of snow we have recieved for the winter. Officially from the main reporting station in Concord, we have recieved a whopping 108.9" of snow. The average snowfall for New Hampshire in the winter is 64.6" of snow. Last month we recieved a total of 33.1" of snow which is almost triple the normal amount of 12.9" of snow. Of course the ski resorts love the snow, but the last who Fridays it was hard to get to the north country because of the storms we have had. Of course, a lot of towns are way over budget for snow removal as we had record snow in December of 44.5" and in January of 22.9" of the white stuff. Of course we are suppose to get mild weather the next two days then the ice will hit tomorrow night during the overnight. Oh well, spring is really close as we may get rid of the snow hopefulle before the baseball season begins.

Well, we got some more snow up in New Hampshire yesterday and it did create some problems. At least most of the schools are closed this week for winter break. I don't understand why there is a winter break and a spring break then the school year goes to mid-June? Of course there was a hockey game last night in Manchester and that the attendence was probably down because of the weather...and it was on a Tuesday night. Of course I'm sure there will be more snow here later in the week. At least spring training is going on in Florida and Arizona so we have baseball and spring to look forward to.

While Ohio is cooling off, up in New Hampshire we are getting the one day mild weather before we get cold again. Its always nice to enjoy a nice pleasant day before another cold spell grips the northern part of the country. Its always good to get the brief warm weather so we can hope that spring comes in earnest soon. As for me, I'm ready for spring and the melting snow and the countdown on when Lake Winnipesaukee becomes ice free.
The blizzard of 1978...part 2

As I read articles last week and watched clips on YouTube about the Ohio part of the blizzard of 1978, I get to see the New England version of the blizzard of 1978. Yes, the coverage started about the New England part this past Sunday in the Sunday News of Manchester. Yes, it is the Sunday version of the Manchester Union Leader. As the week goes on I heard some of the truck drivers at work talking about it and how bad it was in Massachusetts. One of the major roads around Boston, Interstate 95-State Route 128 was a huge parking lot as people just parked their vehicles on the road and walked just to try and get home. There was also some stories about people doing cross country skiing on roads and streets to get around. The Massachusetts National Guard had to use cranes to get the roads cleared so the plows can get the roads cleared. The main weather issue in the region is when there is a system comes up from the south along the coast. The local people call it a Nor'easter as it has lots of moisture from the south along with wind to create a blizzard in the winter or a major rain event in the summer. From what I gather from the reports the blizzard of 1978 here in the Northeast was the combination of the system from the west combining with the southern system to create the big blizzard.

Having lived in different areas of the United States, I got to see a lot of different weather. Of course, growing up around Ashland, I was very blessed to see some of the better meteologists in the country like Wally Kinnan on the weekends on another station and of course Dick Goddard. I learned a lot from watching Dick and Wally about the different patterns of the weather in Northern Ohio. With the beginnings of cable I got to see a young Dale Nelson in Columbus, which ended up going to Corpus Christi, Texas, to become one of the best in South Texas. Dale is the best in explaining the nuances of how a hurricane develops and knowing where the path of the hurricane will go. Now in the Northeast, you have many different weather patterns and the best group of meteologists are on the Fox affiliate in Boston. My interest in weather has never wavered, and when I go back to Ohio for a visit, I will sit at my uncle's house and watch the weather on Fox 8 with him. Even though we see Andre mostly, our favorite is Dick Goddard.
