As I read articles last week and watched clips on YouTube about the Ohio part of the blizzard of 1978, I get to see the New England version of the blizzard of 1978.  Yes, the coverage started about the New England part this past Sunday in the Sunday News of Manchester.  Yes, it is the Sunday version of the Manchester Union Leader.  As the week goes on I heard some of the truck drivers at work talking about it and how bad it was in Massachusetts.  One of the major roads around Boston, Interstate 95-State Route 128 was a huge parking lot as people just parked their vehicles on the road and walked just to try and get home.  There was also some stories about people doing cross country skiing on roads and streets to get around.  The Massachusetts National Guard had to use cranes to get the roads cleared so the plows can get the roads cleared.  The main weather issue in the region is when there is a system comes up from the south along the coast.  The local people call it a Nor'easter as it has lots of moisture from the south along with wind to create a blizzard in the winter or a major rain event in the summer.  From what I gather from the reports the blizzard of 1978 here in the Northeast was the combination of the system from the west combining with the southern system to create the big blizzard.

Thank you Tom for the blog. I remember the 1978 blizzard too. As I recalled it (not saying to much) is that there were like two cold fronts, one from the north west ( Alberta clipper) and one from the north east, and the main system from the sout making the moisture to make the snow that we got. It was funny as heck for me because it was like 70 degrees in Alaska, becase they were being warmed by some southern wind. The most funny part was my friend Ken Brown walked over to my house from his to go to school. He was half asleep and he was like, " Are you guys ready to go to school?" That was funny as heck. Thank you all for letting me trespond to this, and I hope I added something. God bless from Karl.

Thanks Karl for your comments. I was a teenager in Ohio when the blizzard hit Ohio. It was during my senior year at Ashland High and I just got my drivers license a few days earlier. Of course, it was a while until I could actually do any driving. I'm glad for the videos that I've seen on the Ohio part of the blizzard, as I hear the stories about the New England part of the blizzard around the anniversary of when it hit here every year.

I was born and raised in Ohio and graduated from Ashland High School. I'm a big Cleveland sports fan as well as the Columbus Blue Jackets. I keep up with the Indians and the Cavs on WTAM. I also love reading online newspapers as that is the main way I keep up with what is going on in Ohio. I am a conservative that relies on websites like the Ashbrook Center and talk radio to get most of my news of the day. I live in Derry, NH; and work at a postal facility in Nashua, NH. I go to Manchester, Providence, Pawtucket, and Portland, Maine; to watch minor league baseball and hockey to relax and to see the future major league baseball or hockey players.
