I use to work for a very nice resort in Huron years ago. I am here to tell you that even in the best resorts cleaning the glasses in the room sinks were standard. I do not know if they have changed their policy but believe me even back then it use to gross me out. They used the washcloths that were in the room to clean the glasses. Those glasses never left the rooms. They used the washcloths to scrub the toilet seats and the exterior of the toilets. I could tell you things that would make you never want to stay in a hotel ever again. It has been years since I worked there but I can't imagine it changing all that much. Being as I work as a cleaning maid and knew what went on in those rooms and how they were cleaned or suppose to be cleaned, I never drink from those glasses (I always take my own). I always ask for a clean pillow case because sometimes they didn't get changed. I always ask for clean towels because it the towels didn't look use they sometimes got left in the room as fresh linen. I always bring along a can of Lysol spray and spray the toilet seats, shower, sinks and counter tops also I bring along mite killing/cloth disinfectant sprays. Don't think I am going overboard because I DO know what goes on in those rooms. I had to clean up the mess that was left behind. I DO know how those rooms are not always cleaned. Just to let you know, the blankets and bedspreads are rarely ever changed. Never put your shoes and slippers under the beds or your luggage either.

That just makes me sick to my stomach! they make you pay all that money and at the same time they are putting your life at risk, do you know how many infections you can get from things like that! this should be illegal not just unsanitary! I was recently visiting in detroit and stayed at a Marriot in downtown and the rooms were regularly $179 a night(i didn't pay that much though) but these rooms were "ok" not all that spectacular, but i noticed that alot of things didn't seem very clean, for all that money you would think they could atleast clean the rooms!! I really would like to know why you pay so much to go to a hotel you just sleep there maybe look at some tv but really why do you have to pay so much? I wonder how much the housekeepers get paid maybe that has some impact on how well the rooms are cleaned. My hotel days are over i just don't trust them anymore i'm very fond of staying healthy!

Well, we are all exposed to millions of germs every day - it's what helps us build up an immunity to diseases. So, I do not expect them to wash the bedspreads everytime someone uses the room. But I WOULD expect clean sheets, clean towels and clean glasses! From now on, I'm bringing plastic cups with me to Hotels!!
If I am staying at a hotel for a few days, I always tell the housekeeper that it is not necessary to change my sheets every day. (After all - who changes sheets every day at home?) A BIG part of hotel expenses are doing all the laundry.
My husband and I do a lot of Eco-touring in foreign countries and stay in some very remote places. Places where it is very hard to get clean water. I figure if I use the same sheets and towels more than once, then I am helping the environment and keeping costs down.
But the glass thing WAS disgusting! Cleaning them with the dirty washcloth (we know where it's been)! YECH!!

I worked for Intrawest and Vail Resorts for many years. They were very paticular about all things clean. The rooms would get double inspections and all glasses were sent to us in the kitchen to be run through the dish tank. But when I came back to Ohio I worked for a high profile hotel in downtown Akron ( I wont say which one, think cereal) and all managers has to spend two nights on duty as full hotel manager. When I went to inspect rooms before a guest checked in as we did at the resorts, the house keepers were offended. So when I went ahead and inspected anyway I see what they were hiding. It was an absolute mess. If I were spending over $100 for these rooms i would demand my money back. I think it is lack of proper guest services training in the cities.

When I was in the training period of housekeeper at this resort the manager of the department practically stood over you to make sure you were doing things their way. I was disgusted at the way things were done and I asked questions about why (example: why the glasses weren't sent to the kitchen instead of washed in the rooms) and many other questions about why it was done that way. The labeled me a trouble maker. I had made a comment to one of the other housekeepers about how nasty the rooms really were and the eventually found a reason to let me go. My children (when they were in High school) also worked for a local resort and believe me, you just wouldn't want to know what condition those rooms are in when you get them. Yes, you would expect a very clean room for what you pay for them but it is what the eye can't see is what the problem is.

after rereading the above im left thinking that this is just another example of "sour grapes"....remember in your next life that education pays and you ll be paying the big bucks for a room...instead of wishing you were still cleaning them

I would never say anything about anyone that was not true and in no way was the purpose to be sour grapes. The fact of the matter is, we are all exposed to germs everyday which is good to a point. However why would you want to drink from a glass that has been washed by a washcloth that was left in a room. Do you know where that washcloth has been. NO! I can tell you that they are picked up off of the bathroom floor and used to wash the very glass you are drinking out of. Nobody said to quit traveling but be more cautious when do so. Like I said, I have to stay in hotels but because I have had the pleasure of being a housekeeper for on I know what goes on. Therefore, I take my own clean items or know what to ask for when arriving in my room. That was the purpose of this blog. To make people aware that what you don't know CAN hurt you. I have saved you all to gory details and I am not sure it would be appropriate to put them on here any way. We don't change our bedspreads at home all the time but believe me if you knew what was on those bedspreads at hotels you just may want a clean one. It is up to you just how clean do you want your drinking glass to be and what do you want to sleep under. The choice is yours. You have been informed.
