You are 100% correct when you say that pitbull dogs get negative publicity. You know that there are many other dogs that have a bad temper. I have had a mix pit for 12 years. She is such a joy to have and has never bitten anyone or even remotely tried to bite. She loves kids and all of the grandkids have slept with her since she was a pup. Any dog and I do repeat that ANY dog can be vicious by nature. It is all in how they are raised and treated. There are no bad dogs only bad owners. Pits have always gotten a bad rap because of the damage that they inflict due to their jaw muscles. There damage far exceeds many other breeds but in fact a lab can inflict the same amount of damage as a pit. I have seen it. A Golden Retrieve has a tendency to be snippy but is usually labeled a great family dog. They are because I had one. But he would snip from time to time unlike my pit mix. I have been around many Chihuahua's including my dads. They can be very nasty little dogs and inflict a painful bite that needs stitches and antibiotics. When taking medical training I saw a small child who was bitten in the face by one several time (they don't bite just once they keep going after you) and the child had to have it's lips nearly sewn back on and just missed the child's eye. But you didn't hear anything about this, not even in the local paper. Pits do really get a bad reputation mostly because of how they are treated and raised.

Just to re-state what you already said babe... ALL BREEDS OF DOGS CAN BE VICIOUS.
One of my co workers made the mistake of letting his children play with a golden retriever unattended... OK so he was using the dog as a baby sitter... this "family pet" attacked his three year old, Zack's nose was nearly bitten off, his cheek and lips were also partially removed... That was over two years ago.. Zack is now on surgery #7 and is still no where near looking like a normal boy..

My point... you didn't see that attack on the news because it wasn't a pitbull... channel 3 did a short blurb on it but none of the hype that surrounds a "pitbull attack"...

I agree that any dog can be vicious.
Our neighbors have a bunch of huskies, and the female gets lose from time to time. Last year she came onto our property and crippled my pet goat. She thrashed him around and gave him permanent spinal damage. Needless to say, huskies are NOT my favorite dog.

Any dog can be vicious but we also have to remember that some dogs have a hunting nature in them. We had a collie shepard mix, white german shepard and white lab mix when I was growing up and the collie used to kill bunnies and go after other animals, huskys are the same way and rick..I'm with you, why do you have a pet goat?
Chemist..I did hear about that little boy and my heart goes out to him. As a mother I was horrified by that story. That just proves that kids especially should never be left unsupervised with a dog. kids can be rough and dogs react to that so you have to be careful.

I have goats for a few reasons....
mainly b/c they are sweet, lovable animals.
I have them for weed control on my small farm. I also plan to breed them this fall, and sell their babies. Goat milk, cheese, butter, and fudge are all good reasons too. I was born and raised in Cleveland, moved to the country about 16 yrs ago. We try to be a little self supportive here, grow our own food, we have hens, things like that, so instead of just complaining about the cost of things, we do something to provide ourselves with alot of the essentials.

PS Goats are totaly misunderstood animals. (The one who got hurt is in my avatar.)
I hear alot of jokes from family members who are from Cleveland, but that's ok!

Do you have pygmy goats? I've always wanted one but never really am able to find them. They are very sweet for sure. My uncle had one years ago. Great pet!

Also years ago I had a Husky get in my yard and chew the feet off of my doves. So I surely know about that breed being a predatory dog!

It's all about how the dog was raised and if it was abused. If it is bred to fight, it will be vicious. If it is taken care of and treated humanely, it will be gentle.

klh - I have 1 pygmy, 1 nigerian dwarf, and 2 alpines. The husky that hurt my goat also killed 6 hens that day! I know of a couple pygmy breeders. I like nigerians better b/c they have more color--like my dalmation goat. LOL

polarbear- I agree with you to an extent. I had a shepard mix. I got him as a little pup. We never abused him or treated him badly in any way. He became WAY too territorial with our home and family. He would go after people. Sadly, I had to put him down after he grabbed my daughters friend by the shirt and brought her down to the ground. This was a grown girl, thank goodness she wasn't hurt. It was hard to put him down, since I realy am an animal lover, but human safety comes first. I don't know what made him start acting so crazy.

We have also raised goats. We had them when the kids were young. They are great pets. We had one that love to ride in the van with us. We had a full size window van. It didn't have many seats in the back because we used it to haul things in. When we would make local runs he (the goat) would jump in the back of the van. He never went potty in it either. We got a lot of laughs when people would realize it was a goat and not a dog sticking his head out the window. Goats a great fun and make good 4-H projects too.

I am a wife, mother and grandmother who loves the Lord. I also love my country. I believe in fairness and justice for all races and religions in America. Many of us Americans are of mixed races and religious backgrounds, that is what makes us Americans.
