"WASHINGTON  --  House Democratic and Republican leaders appeared close to agreement with the White House Wednesday night on a significantly reworked package of emergency tax cuts to jolt the economy out of its slump.

At a Wednesday evening meeting, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made major concessions to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits in exchange for tax rebates of at least $300 for all people earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes. Families with children would receive an additional $300 per child, while those paying income taxes could receive higher rebates as well, a senior House aide said"

Sooo, now they want to give a "income tax rebate" to those that did not pay any income  tax in the first place?? Alrighty then...........

Yes quarry, it was completed this afternoon.

Hmmmmmmmmm people getting rebates on taxes they didn't pay. That has existed for a long time in the form of Earned Income Credit........

Funny how Nancy Pelosi abandoned her "poor" people to get what she wanted. Typical politician.

Folks! Don't be fooled or taken in by the promises and the hoopla from politicians. They will all trade what YOU want for what THEY want.

I heard on WNIR that these tax rebates have to be claimed as earned income on the 2008 income tax. Is this true? If so then people who only get a couple of hundred dollars in a rebate will owe instead of receiving a tax refund.

Unreal. I had heard the original proposal was for a 700.00 rebate. Then the morons started debating it.

"I heard on WNIR that these tax rebates have to be claimed as earned income on the 2008 income tax."

Let me see if I get this one right (sarcasm).

1. We (most of us) work, pay a percentage of our earnings to taxes.
2. We get a rabate on OUR money to help stimulate the economy.
3. We have to claim this rebate of OUR money on the following years tax filing (money that we were already taxed on) as earned income credit.

UFB......

Yep. I think that's right. You learn quick! LOL Don't forget about the moochers who also get your money and at least 50% will go towards drugs and alcohol. :)

Yeah, this is just sickening. They give us a rebate check and your not going to get it all. Married couples who work were to get $1600.00 and now $1200.00. Then we have to pay taxes on that. Well, as far as I am concerned they can keep the money. My husband and I for years use to get back a lot of money when our child lived at home. Now we have no dependents we pay out a lot every year. Just sickens me to know that we work every day very hard, pay our taxes and then people who do not work get money, then for each kid they have. Some of these parents have 5, 6, 8 kids. $300.00 a kid!! Okay so welfare parents will get big again. They always come out smelling like roses!!! And I do not begrudge the parents who do work and recieve some assistance, because they are paying their taxes just like I do. Well we know who will be parting it up in July of 2008..

You are all right on. Let me add a few thoughts that no one in the media will ask or give me an answer too. Will our tax dollars in the form of this rebate also go to the Illegals Invaders? You and I know it will, next question is this. Congress wants a SHORT TERM FIX! I have a LONG TERM FIX. The last budget that these traitors sent to EL. Presidente' BUSH had 256 million dollars in PORK.( PORK IS OUR TAXES ) Bush signed this TRASH! My suggestion is to send every LEGAL taxpaying households ONE MILLION DOLLARS! I know that America does not have 256 million taxpayers, so, with the millions that are left, put it in the SS. Fund that they rip off everyday. Wouldn't this give all of us a chance at a life that only the Elite know?

The good news I just saw on Katie Couric: the "top earners" are not getting checks and anyone over $75,000 gets less money. I don't see anything wrong with giving poorer Americans that don't pay taxes money. They need it too.

"I don't see anything wrong with giving poorer Americans that don't pay taxes money. They need it too."

Sure they do....then they should work 60 hours week (or whatever it takes) like other sucessful Americans and "earn" the right to pay these insane taxes.

If you want to "stimulate" the economy, give some of the money to the poorer people as well. According to "Republican Logic", they'll just "waste" the money on stuff like food and clothing. Let's give it all to businesses and rich people.

I actually do not like this idea at all. Our broke, cash strapped government is giving money away?

Sigh.....I see your point and it is well taken, but the economy does need a spending boost.
It has worked before and should work again.

Hey, I work my ass off, I would love nothing more than to keep more of MY money.

All they are doing is polishing a turd. People are taxed too much. They get $300 back and it's gone in no time on gas or heating. The second one especially here in NE Ohio.

i don't think that this "rebate" is going to become taxable income to any of us. that would be double taxation.............

PB, i was more concerned about pelosi trading off the additional food stamps & unemployment benefits. that pathetic $300 bone is pennies compared to the extension of unemployment some could really use.

see? never trust any politician, they will trade YOU for what THEY want.

Hey, I work my BLEEP off, I would love nothing more than to keep more of MY money.

Now, you're catching on. That is the Republican position. You SHOULD be able to keep more of your money. You probably didn't notice. President Bush, a REPUBLICAN, optioned for $800.00. Nancy Pelosi a DEMOCRAT, reduced it to $700.00!! Now, who is trying to help you and who is not?

That is possible but only if you had earned income for 2007.
