Rock and roll hall of fame or hall of shame?

Pop star Madonna has been selected to enter the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The announcement from the Hall of Fame Foundation also named The Dave Clark Five, poet and folk-rocker Leonard Cohen, singer-songwriter John Mellencamp and 60s surfer band The Ventures for the honours.

 

The musicians will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March during a ceremony in New York.

The nominees are chosen by a committee and are cut down to a final list of five by more than 600 music experts.

Artists become eligible for the honour 25 years after their first recording.

Madonna signed her first US record deal in 1982, and scored her first hit with Holiday in the UK two years later.

Mellencamp emerged from Bloomington, Ind., in the early 1980s with enduring, heartland rock tracks like Pink Houses, Rain on the Scarecrow and Jack & Diane. 

 

Cohen has been producing folk-tinged rock since the late 1960s, with tracks like Suzanne.

The Ventures are best known for instrumental rock evergreens such as the theme from Hawaii Five-O, Walk Don't Run and Perfidia.

The Dave Clark Five become one of the most successful British "invasion" bands of the US during the 1960s.

Last year's inductees were REM, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Van Halen, the Ronettes and Patti Smith.

 

Once inducted, the artists are featured in the Museum's Hall of Fame exhibit, which includes a computerised jukebox containing every song of each inductee and a film played on three big screens recounting their careers and music.

Madonna? Are you kidding me? Don't get me wrong I like here music (can't stand her), but this is the "rock and roll" hall of fame.
Maybe they should change it to "music" hall of fame.
She gets in while deserving bands such as Rush, Yes, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Genesis, The Cars, Heart, etc all get dissed again.

i like the rock and roll hall of fame, it's interesting.

i still don't get why the induction ceremony is not held in the actual building.here in cleveland........

Personally I think the rock hall is a joke. It is a personal matter with me. My favorite band has always been Rush. After 33 years with the same three members who all are of great character, 22 consecutive gold records 14 of those have gone platinum, I could go on and on.....
and they induct Madonna.....its a joke.
I will never darken the door of that building until they become true to their name.

Whether you like her or not, Madonna has been a pop icon for 25 years and still going strong. Personally, I liked her earlier music, but she can still draw a crowd. A lot of my favorite groups get overlooked every year too - I LOVE Alice Cooper and Deep Purple - but no matter who they nominate or choose, someone will be upset.

That is part of my point, a pop icon. I love her "old" music. I have here best of CD in my car. I guess it comes down to the definition of rock and roll. Thats why I suggest a change in their name. "Music hall of fame".
That would end the argument.

I also think the induction should take place in Cleveland. After all this is where the hall is located, and not by accident. Thisis the place where Allen Freed first coined the phrase " ROCK and ROLL ! " But how many of the inductees actually fit the definition of rock and roll ? There should be a Music Hall of Fame established somewhere to enshrine those that do not fit the definition of rock and roll. The next thing you know they will be trying to put crap artists ( you`ll notice I spelled it as it should be spelled. Nowdays they leave the C off the front.) in the R&R hall. And that doesn`t even fit the definition of music, let alone rock and roll. C...rap was created to level the playing field. After all, not everybody can sing. Y`all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS !

Their clame is that there are not enough hotel rooms in Cleveland or a big enough venue for the ceremony. Bull! The State Theater holds 3000 people, more than most theaters in NYC! Plenty of hotel rooms also! It's all "Music Politics".
