There is an old saying "It takes an entire village to raise a child". We need to provde an environment where children can learn to be good citizens and encourage them to do so. However all those good intentions are wasted if the parent/guardian of the children provide opposition to those values whether by example or by apathy. Children often immitate their idols. If thier 'idols' is not the parent(s), but instead the local gangster, drug dealer or even a celebrity that endorses drug use and/or violence, then their perception of right and wrong becomes skewed. Once the child forms his/her opinions of right and wrong, good and bad, it is a monumentous task to effect change if not impossible in some instances. Bottom line: parents need to take responsibility as well as society. Both parents and society need to stop glamourizing 'gangsters' and hoodlums and others that exemplify anti social behavior and start teaching children right from wrong. Show them there are grave consequences for antisocial behavior and great rewards for becomming a good citizen. Parents need to step up and be the hero for their children and lead them down the right path. If the parents do not want to take responsibility, then the 'village' needs step in and hold them responisble as well as the child. Apathy and ambilvalence will no longer be an acceptable way of raising a child. Antisocial behavior endagers not just the child, but society as a whole is at risk. We are the future victims of the crimes that these children end up commiting. I for one do not want to be a victim or statistic!!
