The Pope's visit to America is historic for all the wrong reasons. While people in this country suffer with the loss of jobs, high gasoline and food prices, and an economy that is unstable, I am stunned to see our federal, state, and local governments spending millions of dollars to host this visit. What a spectacle!
First, why should taxpayers foot the bill for thousands of police officers ( most on overtime pay)to line the streets in American cities to protect a religious leader? What happened to the separation of church and state?
Second, how much energy was wasted on the assorted vehicles -limos, trucks, security vehicles, clean up trucks, etc.-while the "Popemobile" paraded down the street. It's almost all like a bad "B" movie.
I was really struck by how ironic a story was that I heard on the news today...In Harlem, the schools are so bad that a lottery is held to see which residents get into the best school. According to the story the vast majority of Harlem residents will go to very ineffective schools. Too bad the money NYC WASTED on the Pope's visit couldn't have gone to the residents of Harlem (American citizens) instead of a religious leader's visit. Once the Pope is gone, the money is gone and wasted. Money put into the schools and students would have been a much better use of the funds. The Pope's visit was fine..but, it should have been paid for ( including all the ridiculous security) by the Catholic Church not American taxpayers.

I agree with you. I don't want to demean any Religion. The pope mobile is Bulletproof, no need for the cops. He is not the leader of my Church, but the Federal Government and the State Officials will use my taxes for the pope. Next on my Peeved off list is this, some one comes to you're home, but have basically nothing good to say about you're home. They tell you that to be Holy, you must let the whole State have you're home for shelter, you must feed these folks, you must have health care and education for these people who invaded you're house, or you are no longer worthy, in God's eyes? This Pope will return to Italy, and to his Sanctuary where anyone caught Illegally entering, is prosecuted to the full extent of THEIR LAWS. Spain, their neighbor shoots to kill invaders or Illegals. The Pope had to make his little venture to the United Nations, another of our beloved Guest Houses, put on we the tax payers. I've rambled enough, but you know how I feel about his visit. Did he Bless you or yours? How about AMERICA? By the way, MY Wife is CATHOLIC!!

Kent Guy, taxpayer money is wasted EVERY day pumping money into programs that don't work. So it is OK with you to pour BILLIONS of dollars over the years into wasteful social programs, but a few million to host the Pope is a big deal? The Pope and what he represents is most needed in the world right now, and maybe his message put a small dent into the chaos.

The pope's security wasn't paid for by taxpayers. It was paid for by donations... or so I head.

I care a great deal about animal welfare. I am appalled by the amount of animal abuse that is reported daily and I use every opportunity I have to push for stronger laws to punish those who abuse innocent animals.I strongly encourage everyone who agrees to speak out for animals. I consider myself an independent- not aligned with the Republican or Democratic party. I love the United States with a passion and offer insight and criticism to make this country as great as our Founding Fathers envisioned.
