Some very well known and well respected journalist are comparing the events in Mumbai to the attacks in the U.S. on 9/11.   What happened in India was horrible.  I watched for 3 days as people were under siege in 2 major hotels and other spots around the city.  What India was left with after all was said and done was destruction and the death of almost 200 people and the totals may grow.   In the destruction the Taj Hotel which is over a hundred years old was a scene of the most bloodshedd.  My heart goes out to the family of the victims.  How could it not.  Now comes the duty of piecing the events and the finger pointing to who might be the blame.

With that being said I cringe at the words out of the mouths of  reporters on the scene saying this is India's 9/11.  4 Planes crashing into 4 different locations killing 3000, destroying two 110 story buildings and a large chunk of the Pentagon just doesn't compare to what happened in Mumbai.  Terrorism on any level and anywhere is terrible.  But the Magnitude of 9/11 is blazed in my brain forever.  90 countries lost citizens  in the attack.  Maybe it's because I live here and knew the Towers so well.   I may be wrong and I'm sure I'll hear about it, but this is my view.  Mumbai wasn't 9/11.

Just my oppinion:With all the bomings going on over seas in differant countries, they are living in a continous 9/11 every day for years.
If you add up the numbers of the ones we know about,it would out reach 3000.But don't get me wrong,I walked down the treets in NY after the fact,it was un-nerving to say the least. But to compare the 2 is like comparing apples to oranges.3ooo in one shot(4 planes) is in no way equeal to the India bombings.

Maybe those stupid reporters need to see the bodies from both attacks stacked in separate piles to get some perspective.

SDMF,we haven't found all the bodies fron the towers in NY.But I get your point,it would be a mag. differance in size. Both are sad issues and will be for ever.

Couldn't agree more with you more Dave.....it does not lessen the fact that what happened in Mumbai was a tragedy...but it certainly is not a 9/11.

Perhaps these journalist should go back and review the tapes of 911 and recant their comparisons. I agree with Chip 200 does not make 3,000. As bad as that is, in no way should they or can they be compared, apples and oranges is correct.

It was the fear factor that draws the comparison. Especially when you consider the fact that you don't really think of Muslim extremists targeting a country like India.
I think given the impact of this terrorist attack, it was at least comparable to 9/11.
But it doesn't surprise me that we're so "Ameri-centric" that such a comparison would draw the ire of many. ...This is why WE'RE the chief target of terrorism.

I agree with G_C. While the body counts are dissimilar, the clear intention was to provoke unrest between Pakistan and India in the hopes of igniting another war. These terrorists are well versed in the effectiveness a " catalyst" attack can have on otherwise civilized human beings. (See-Mosque bombings in Iraq)

I was watching a special this weekend...on the History Channel...

Here's another numerical perspective that, in our "immediate world" we've lost:

We have lost 4,000 soldiers in the freedom of Iraq. We lost 80,000 in a period of one month from Dec 25, 1944 until January 25, 1945 in the "Battle of the Bulge", a seminal battle in the freeing of France and Germany....

The death of any individual person is a tragedy...but we truly need to maintain perspective on numbers....

I think the slaughter in Mumbai is so tragic because it is usually a safe place to live and visit. A friend of mine goes there often, and was shocked by the incident. Goes to show how this kind of thing can happen anywhere, in these days and times.
Comparing this to 9/11, however, does not make any sense. I agree with Chip on this one, "200 does not 3000 make....".

This intention wasn't "clear" to me, Happy. I appreciate you agreeing with the core of my point, but did this group ever state anything that would give credence to such a claim? ...Just wondering..because I really don't know.

ANY TERRIORIST ACT IS THE ULTIMATE DISPLAY OF COWARDNESS. The first paragraph in this blog clearly states my anger and disgust of the act of terror in Mumbai. The loss of life due to this or any act of terrorism is disgraceful to say the least. No argument there. My argument is the comparison by journalist and others comparing this to 9/11. I dare anyone out there to tell me the planes going into Towers one and two will not be blazed in your memories till the day you die. I dare anyone out there to tell me the sight of people jumping from 80 stories and higher won't live long after a new Tower may be built. Yes Chip, 100 of thousands of solders have died on battlefields around the world. Yes Graham_Cracker(Dave) it may be "Ameri-centric" that such a comparison would draw the ire of many. I am just talking about these two events and I find it insulting to compare Mumbai to 9/11.

In fact, when the dust settles, You are going to see a coalition that includes Pakistan, India and the US that fights terror in the region, forged by Condi Rice, in her last month...

The terrorists, like all before them, only seal the deal against them....Wantn murder wil serve no purpose in a Godly world...

I'm sorry to have to disagree with the comparison of Mumbai and 911. The incredible amount of lives lost and the amount destruction and devastation these terrorists caused is not even close.

This was a life changing event for all of us in the way we think, act, travel etc,. For what these terrorist did to us, I'm all in favor of hunting down each and everyone of these coward b*^#*rds and making them pay with their lives, public execution or public stoning doesn't matter to me. Sorry chip, but I'm all about an eye for an eye, and maybe a little bit more and making them pay for what they did, this way they'll never forget what they did like we will never forget.

Make an example of them publicly; this way here any future terrorist can see what will happen to them if they ever think about doing something like that again.

The comparison doesn't do anything to diminish the tragic gravity of 9/11; it's just a comparison.
It's a bit like calling the best little league hitter the "Big Papi" of the league. Does it mean that the kid can even come close to hitting like David Ortiz? No.
I've heard the comparison spoken this way, "INDIA'S 9/11." Well, sorry to "offend" anyone who wishes to be the most pious rememberer of the towers falling down, but I think that's perfectly fair.
I can't stand when people exploit these types of things to self-aggrandize. I see it as falsely pious.
Nobody would ever believe me, but recently I found a journal entry I had written on September 10, 2001. In it I said, "I don't know why, but I feel like there are a thousand souls crying out from a great fire somewhere..."
On September 11, I was shocked and stunned as much as anyone. I don't need to ascribe some kind of untouchable "sacredness" to it in order convince myself of the sincerity of how it affected me.

I have no reason to "self aggrandize". 200 ain't 3000. But Graham, your theory that "It's a bit like calling the best little league hitter the "Big Papi" of the league" is a bit disrespectful of the Indian dead...there are no "little league death tolls"...

Comparisons just sometimes don't exist in a way that respects those who deserve respect...

This is a rotten comparison. For everyone.

Totally in agreement with GC. This is India's 9/11, just as the bombings of the subway and bus systems in England and Spain where those countries 9/11. Americans do not own the tragedy of terroism it belongs to all humans that are effected by it. I imagine the Indian people are feeling just as shell shocked as we all did on Sept 11.

The senseless loss is what makes it comparable to 9/11 and has nothing to do with the total death count. It is the loss of innocence that is what makes it their 9/11!

People are using the term 911 to loosely. Comparing it to and attaching it to anything and everything as well as other bombings that have taken place is not a vey good analogy, and taking and using 911 as a slogan for anything that has happened or happens is being disrespectful.
