Boy I feel I am setting myself up for some controversy, and even some mean spirited remarks.  People who know me will know that I have covered a number of things,  sometimes I have the majority with me an sometimes not.  I don't no  on what side of the fence remarks will fall on this one but I feel compelled to at least discuss it.

I am talking about this retired Milford Veteran who the housing authority has told him to take down his Christmas display.  Now don't get me wrong, I think when people criticize Christmas and other holiday displays and say they shouldn't be there "I say get a life".  He says this was a tradition.  2 years is not a tradition.  His display was tired and worn and was also accompanied by 24 hour music.  During the Summer I have sat in my apartment and when the ice cream truck comes by with the music poring out of the truck.  Now this is only 5 or 10 min. of repetitive music and I want to throw something out my window.  This guy strings thousands of lights from his balcony and surround trees.  His electric bill is payed by the Milford Housing Authority.  I don't think this fits in the same category of when people protest about something in a town square.  His eye for a pretty decoration doesn't conform and that's that.  I live in a condo/rental and there are rules.  Notices are slipped under my door for several different reasons including what I can and can not display in my windows.  In the years that I live here, I have never got one complaint about the wreath on my door or the single candle in each of my windows. (I pay my own electric bill).  Others have adorned their windows with colored lights and never have I heard of complaints.  I would bet the cat on it that the problem probally started because of the music.  He played and example and said "it wasn't much louder, well maybe a tone".   These homes are close together and his connecting neighbors  probally couldn't take it anymore.  When you are in the comfort of your home and it becomes uncomfortable that's a problem.  I have a kid who practices his Saxophone in the apartment above me.  I may not like it, but the rules say as long as it is not after 10pm that's the breaks.  I live in a apartment and have for most of my years.  A certain amount of noise is expected.  If it goes beyond the expected I have been known to knock on a door.  This I think is a totally different problem and he has to go by what the people say.

I have to respond to critters blog over here because he deletes you if you don't say what he wants to hear. Kids yelling and lawns be cut are not prolonged noises. You can yell out your window and tell the kids to shut up. How many times can you hear silent night. Even the best of us get tired of it sooner or later. Critter you don't know your bass from your elbow.

There is always a compromise...he chose not to seek one.

24 hour music is bad enough. Even worse is that the housing authority is footing the bill for the display. If this were someone paying their own light bill, then I'd say keep the display but turn the tunes off at night- doesn't that violate disturbing the peace laws after a certain time of night anyway? Or, do what I've seen one homeowner do to keep the peace and set up a device where people driving through can tune their car radios to a certain station and hear the music.

And trust me, Dave, I live with someone who'll be putting batteries in the sound parts of all their Christmas carol-playing clocks in the next couple of days...ALL Christmas carols get real old real fast. Even when you only hear them every hour on the hour! (Some of these clocks don't have the wonderful "light sensor" included that shuts the tunes off if it's dark)

Xantun, I am a sucker for Christmas music. I have several artist versions of Carols. I even have been known to throw one in the dog days of Summer. On the other hand, I compare it to the Red Sox. I love to see them get here in the Spring. By the time Fall rolls along, I'm glad to see them go with the extra traffic in the neighborhood. I can be fickle.

Dave, don't get me wrong, while I'm not a sucker for Christmas music, I don't mind it. BUT, when you're hearing them a lot, then yeah, it gets real old. Real fast. ("Joy To The World" every morning at 3am really loudly? Trust me, my friend, you don't want to know!)

It's just a very unfortunate event for the VET. Yes I do respect you for the service you provided us and thank you BUT...... Rules are rules. Keep your celebration within the walls of the unit and enjoy it. Play your Christmas Carols and Love the season.

In the end the season isn't all about pretty lights and songs it's about the birth of Jesus. If you keep the true meaning in you're heart then petty rules won't bother you.

I am also a softy when it comes to Carols. It brings me back to differnet times. I can listen to a Bing Crosby White Christmas and try to picture what my Dad was doing hearing the song while fighting in WW2. It's a chance to keep traditions alive and pass along to our young ones the love of Christmas.

L_06, Good hearing from you. Your last paragraph gives me some fond memories also. I wish the younger generation with take the time to listen to some great music. Our Veterans from all past wars must have a story or two when it comes to hearing Christmas Carols.

I agree with you, fenway. I'm glad it seems that you're not being accosted the way you thought you would be.

I figured people would jump on the whole "how dare you do this to a vet" argument.

Being a vet is very respectable. But respect needs to be a TWO-WAY street; it doesn't give anyone a hall-pass to break the rules and/or annoy people.
