The Worlds Children Peace Monument
The Worlds Children Peace Monument (WCPM) is located at Coe Lake Park in Berea, Ohio.  It was designed and built by David Jakupca as a project of the International Center for Environmental Arts (ICEA) in cooperation with the United Nations Culture of Peace Program. As new WCPM Stones are added to gardens around the world, it will, in time, become the largest monument dedicated to Global Peace. The sculpture serves as a milestone for the ICEAlity of the Environmental Art Movement indigenous to the Great Cleveland Area, that is to "Assist in understanding of the relationship between Humans and their Environment through the Arts to build a sustainable culture of Peace". The WCPM was officially inaugurated in 2003 at the 3rd World Peace Conference held in Verbania, Italy by American Cultural Ambassadors David and Renate Jakupca where they received an Italian Medal of Arts. They were also recognized by the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland and in 2006 appointed Universal Peace Ambassadors. The WCPM is organized in support of the UN Decade of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World and the UN Millenium Development Goals.

According to the International Center for Environmental Arts (ICEA), the results of a historic Nov. 4 - namely the election of Barack Obama and re-election of key members of Congress like Dennis Kucinich - will usher in an era of greater support for the arts in America.

American Cultural Ambassadors David and Renate Jakupca issued this statement on the results of Election Day: “The historic election of Sen. Barack Obama to be the 44th President of the United States will have tremendous impact on the nation’s arts community, public schools, and creative workforce. His commitment to arts and arts education on the campaign trail is just a preview of what his administration can accomplish. President-elect Obama demonstrates the leadership and vision to advance the arts in America through ICEAality, by investing in more arts education in public schools, increased funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, promoting cultural diplomacy, and supporting artists rights".

Nov 4th's election results also expanded the base of support for the arts in Congress, which will help move arts and arts education initiatives through the legislative process. Initiatives that will fuel innovation and creativity are key to our economic recovery and global competitiveness. That ICEAlity is connected to the nation's core issues  strengthens the sense of national and patriotic belonging in the American.

Living in twentyfirst century America, with its increasing pressures and problems, will require more attention being given to the aesthetical dimensions of the personality. ICEA is committed to the promotion of aesthetic values which reflects positively on the practices and behaviour of individuals in their personal lives and in their attitudes towards people and their country's causes. That ICEAlity is connected to the nation's core issues assists strengthens the sense of national and patriotic belonging in the American Spirit.

In this election, Arts Vote 2008 raised the public dialogue about the arts and arts education throughout the entire campaign cycle: from presidential primaries in New Hampshire to Congressional races in all 50 states. The ArtsVote2008 initiative successfully advocated for presidential and many congressional candidates to make strong, public statements and commitments in support of arts and arts education.

On the state and local front, arts advocacy partners successfully engaged candidates and voters throughout the country to provide more support for ICEAlity and the environmental arts. Specifically in Minnesota, an historic statewide ballot initiative —the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment — passed, amending the state constitution to dedicate a portion of sales tax to support its natural and cultural resources. This initiative will infuse $30 million alone to Minnesota cultural organizations, nearly tripling the current budget of the State Arts Board. An additional $10 million to $20 million will fund arts education programs, the Minnesota Historical Society, and other local historical societies. This continues the longstanding trend demonstrating that voters are willing to invest in quality public funding in arts and culture.

ALABAMA PEACE STONE of the WCPM

The Little Zoo That Could
The zoo is in a very vulnerable location. It is located in a low-lying area just a mile from the Gulf of Mexico. After going through three complete hurricane evacuations in less than a year and being closed so long for storm repair, the decision has been made that it would be best to move the Zoo to higher ground.  Thanks to an extremely generous donation of 25 acres by Clyde Weir, who is the owner of Souvenir City, and his daughter Andrea Weir Franklin the zoo will be able to relocate to higher ground.  This new property is located just off Highway 59 in Gulf Shores, two miles north of the Intercoastal Waterway bridge.
The zoo has
begun the process of selecting an architect for the project and hopefully will begin actual construction of the new zoo early in 2007.
The Alabama Peace Stone of the WCPM will be the new zoo attraction, located in the new childrens part of the zoo.

I see and when the Eye is opened, all is light.
The Tibetan Master Djwhal Khul in Esoteric Astrology by Alice A. Bailey

Real progress in overcoming poverty, ill-health, environmental degradation, and injustice throughout the world, we now recognize, requires not only the authority and resources of governments, but also the ingenuity and initiative of the world's growing civil society sector and the millions of people it can help mobilize for effective social action. However, our ability to engage this sector effectively remains impeded in many places by a lack of clear understanding of its true nature and potential.
Implementing the United Nations Handbook on Nonprofit Institutions in the
System of National Accounts, Johns Hopkins University Fact Sheet

The International Center for Environmental Arts (ICEA) was founded in 1987 to meet the compelling needs of ordinary citizens for access to current, balanced, understandable information about complex global issues.
http://www.TheICEA.Org

Greetings Friends,

The result of humanity's awakening consciousness is visible all around us. Humanity is becoming aware through ICEAlity of its potential and power on planet Earth. Moved by a sense of responsibility and compassion, individual citizens—alone, in groups, organizations, far-reaching networks and global partnerships are tackling problems, which in the past seemed entrenched and unsolvable.

At the United Nations, for example, there is renewed energy and hopefulness about humanity's ability to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. With the aid of the United Nations Foundation, the Arabella Philanthropic Investment Advisors, and the Permanent Missions of Austria, Qatar and the United Kingdom, the President of the General Assembly, Dr. Srgjan Kerim convened the following thematic debate in the early part of April: "Recognizing the Achievements, Addressing the Challenges and Getting Back on Track to Achieve the MDGs by 2015."

In opening the debate, Dr. Kerim reported much promising information to the 110 participating delegations, including the following:

Since the Millennium Declaration in the year 2000,
     34 countries are now on track to meet the infant mortality goal;
     44 more countries are on track to meet the poverty goal;
     47 more countries are on track to meet the education goal;
The debt of more than 22 countries has been fully cancelled.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also delineated the areas of "undeniable progress," globally and in specific countries. However, all present stressed the fact that "the MDG track record is mixed," and that humanity yet has a long way to go before achieving them fully.

Importantly, and as is the case increasingly, the interdependent nature and synthesis of all issues and all sectors of society were recognized, as evident in Dr Kerim's following assessment: "global consensus recognizes that economic growth, by itself, is not enough. Inclusive growth needs to be accompanied by good governance, care for the environment, social justice, human rights, gender equality and quality public services."

This point was further emphasized by Ted Turner, President and Founder of the United Nations Foundation who pointed to the value of constructive partnerships among the diverse global sectors: "Over time, we've realized that our real value is not in the number or amount of projects we start. Our value is in forging partnerships between business, civil society and the United Nations. When these sectors work together, there's virtually nothing we can't do."

In closing the thematic debate, Dr. Kerim announced that the General Assembly (representing "we the peoples of the United Nations") has a critical leadership role to play in mobilizing global support to achieve the MDGs and to that effect, until the target date of 2015, the Assembly will yearly convene a meeting to take stock of global implementation and to hold all partners to account for their Millennium Development Goals commitments.

Because Pope Benedict XVI is visiting the UN this Friday, April 18th, only those with an official UN grounds pass can enter the UN; thus in Cleveland, our own commitment will and dedication are reflected in these thoughts: "Let this debate be an impulse which will resonate not only in New York but around the world. 2008 can be the year of action."

Peace Friends,
David and Renate Jakupca

Celebrity LeBron James joins David and Renate Jakupca as Official International Goodwill Ambassadors from Cleveland focusing on the 'World Community'.

ARK in Berea - Maria Sharapova, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador, has invited Cleveland Cavaliers Basketball star LeBron James to “Team Up Against Poverty” on a new UNDP advertisement to garner support for achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). World-renowned photographer Patrick Demarchelier photographed both stars for this new series of UNDP pro bono advertisements.

"Team Up Against Poverty"

The new advertisements are the centerpiece of a campaign which revolves around the concept of “Teaming Up Against Poverty” to achieve the MDGs - feature celebrities from the world of sports, arts, fashion or business portrayed in teams of two by top professional photographers. Fifty celebrities, including UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors and soccer greats Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane, have agreed to participate in the initiative to promote the MDGs and to undertake specific anti-poverty activities, ranging from supporting educational activities and HIV/AIDS projects to funding water and sanitation initiatives and promoting safe drinking water campaigns.
The advertisements are being produced thanks to the time and talent donated by photographers and celebrities towards the fight against poverty. Hundreds of newspapers and magazines across the globe published an earlier series of anti-poverty advertisements.

"Cleveland on the International Stage"
In 1997, David and Renate Jakupca, Founders of the International Center for Environmental Arts (ICEA) were appointed as Official American Goodwill Cultural Ambassadors to EXPO 2000, the World's Fair held in Hanover, Germany.  As National Co-Directors for the U.S. Network for EXPO2000, the primary purpose  was to promote the different aspects of the World's Fair to non-governmental organizations (NGO) in the United States and share with them new global ideas on the environment, culture and messages of goodwill.
The Environmental Arts of tomorrow must be always at the fringe of what is coming.  As technology expands the horizons of human potential, we must find ways of making this potential work in sustainable ways if we are going to survive in the new Millennium.
"Humankind, Nature and Technology - A Platform for a Future"
In the 20th year of promoting ICEAlity, "the understanding of the relationship between Humans and their Environment through the Arts", ICEA's current project is The WORLDS CHILDREN PEACE MONUMENT (WCPM). Designed at the ARK in Berea and built at Coe Lake Park in Berea, Ohio, the WCPM was officially inaugurated in 2003 at the 3rd World Peace Conference held in Verbania, Italy by the Jakupca's, where they received an Italian Medal of Arts.  The Jakupca's were also recognized by the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland and in 2006 appointed Universal Peace Ambassadors.  The WCPM is organized in support of the UN Decade of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World and the UN Millennium Development Goals.
ICEA has been in just the right place in the past two decades for the interaction between technology and human expression to foster.
ICEA's responsible community programs and cultural projects will always be dictated by positive human values, and rooted in people's sense of place on this earth as we work with others from around the World.

North Korea – Visit by the New York Philharmonic

The purpose of music, like that of all the arts in North Korea, is to serve the State.  Kim Jong Il -- who in his youth oversaw the transformation of North Korean cinema, opera and performing arts into 'revolutionary' forms -- understands that mission full well. It remains to be seen how he'll use the New York Philharmonic's concern internally -- According to information sent to American Cultural Ambassadors David and Renate Jakupca, the people of North Korean were informed of the visit only on the Friday before the concert.
But we believe cultural exchanges such as the visit by the New York Philharmonic to Pyongyang provide an opportunity for ICEAlity to enhance mutual understanding and promote a sustainable Culture of Peace.  http://www.TheICEA.org

Viktor Schreckengost, a fellow Clevelander whose name means "frightening guest" was  ranked as one of the leading industrial designers of the 20th century, died Saturday night at age 101.
In a career lasting more than 70 years, Schreckengost had an immense, if largely anonymous, influence on American life and popular culture. Schreckengost's peers included the far more famous designers Raymond Loewy and Norman Bel Geddes. Schreckengost, whose influence ranks with theirs according to scholars, had a quieter and more low-profile career in Cleveland. But he combined artistic brilliance with an acute sensitivity to form and function in designs for everything from trucks to bicycles, furniture, industrial equipment and dinnerware.

"The last thing I look at is aesthetics," he said during an interview at his Cleveland Heights home in 2000, on the eve of a major retrospective on his work at the Cleveland Museum of Art. "The first thing I have to solve is the basic function of things."
Mr. Schreckengost passed while vacationing in Tallahassee, Fla., as he did regularly in the winter.

Brown-Forward Funeral Home on Chagrin Boulevard is handling the arrangements.
Like many of his fans, American Cultural Ambassadors David and Renate Jakupca were was deeply saddened to hear of this of Vic's passing. He was truly a gift to all of us! His talent was immense and his potential was limitless. It was a honor, as a fellow artists, to have witnessed his growth as an designer in the many roles he undertook. With that beautiful and genuine smile he captured the hearts of many. Our sincere condolences go to the Schreckengost family and the rest of his friends and fans.
Gain comfort in knowing that he was truly beloved.

Ark in Berea: Expressing concern over the extremely fragile humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip American Cultural Ambassadors David and Renate Jakupca commented:  "The living standards in Gaza are at levels unacceptable to a world that promotes the elimination of poverty and the observance of human rights as core principles for building a sustainable Culture of Peace. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) needs to deal with the Israely blockade and allow the entry of the minium commercial humanitarian supplies required to meet the total humanitarian needs of the people in Gaza".

Merry Christmas from David and Renate

When we all come together to celebrate as one and connect with those near and dear to us.  Goodwill is the theme as we more readily open our hearts and naturally embrace each other in mutual brother/sisterhood during this period. Whoever you are, wherever you live, whatever your religious beliefs, this is a very special time of year. A time of customs and tradition, of ceremonies and celebrations. A time for family and friends to come together. A time for sharing.

Within these moments, remember that you carry your own fragile and unique gift that has a wondrous and amazing quality; it is always with you, has cost nothing, it has a never ending quality so that no matter how much you give away there is always more available. It is our love.

W
hen the Christmas Spirit comes from our heart we can shine and share the boundless love for all life, we know that all is well and that our very existence is enough. We see the reflection of our own nature in the eyes of another and this timeless love instantly balances and heals our reality. As different as we all are in so many ways, there is so much that can bring us together: our love of family, our mutual respect for the strength of our diversity, our shared wishes for peace, health, and happiness.

Consider sharing the spirit that you are without condition and see how it changes your perspective and everyone around you. You have the light and love of the world, always have been and always will be.  Shine your light this season, as well as all year long, and give the simplest gift of unconditional love to everyone you encounter.

In this season of holidays, we send our love and our appreciation to all of you. May the joys and the blessings of this fragile season fill your lives and your hearts - as they do ours.

* Frahgeilee - Pronounced 'fragile' in certain Cleveland neighborhoods.

Designed at the ARK in Berea and built at Coe Lake Park in Berea, Ohio, the Worlds Children Peace Monument (WCPM) was officially inaugurated in 2003 at the 3rd World Peace Conference held in Verbania, Italy by American Cultural Ambassadors David and Renate Jakupca, where they received an Italian Medal of Arts.  They were also recognized by the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland and in 2006 appointed Universal Peace Ambassadors.  The WCPM is organized in support of the UN Decade of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World and the UN Millennium Development Goals.

"The European American community is very proud of ICEA achievements.  And I hope, our pride will show with our continuing support for this organization". states Zenon A. Domanski, Editor and Publisher of KOLORS Magazine.

At the formation of ICEA, Canadian activist Rick Coronado from Great Lakes United forecasted, " The International Center for Environmental Arts (ICEA) David and Renate Jakupca will act as our benchmark by which we can measure change and continuity in everything from the environment to relations between peoples through the Arts.  But more than that, it will remind us that we are not the first People, native and newcomers alike to face difficult choices in troubled times".  The winds of change blew as hard then as now.

When honestly told, the David and Renate story inspires without leading us into simpleminded platitudes.  History humanizes us by giving names, faces and texture to our physical and cultural landscapes.  Not only do the Jakupca exhibits entertain us, they serve as a map and guide for life on the road of a sustainable Culture of Peace.
