I have been asking myself for some time now what is going on in this world today? People lose their jobs, houses and this country is falling apart with debt. We have so many wars all seem to have to with religion in some way or the other. I am not going to mention any names but my church I went to was closed because our pastor took the money we gave every Sunday. He was always well dressed and drove a new Cadillac every year. If our churches want to play politics why should they be free from paying taxes also? If so many wars based on religion why do we have to pay to clean it up? Imagine if every church paid their fair share in taxes how fast our country would pay the bills? It is not fair for the churches to take our money and live high on the hog pay off politicians for votes and be free from the tax man. How does anyone else feel? Why do freedom of religion have to mean freedom from paying taxes from all that money they make?

drey, that up there ^ would be the alias for someone who once pretended to be your staunchest supporter. she has now "turned to the dark side".

try not to be offended by her, all she is after is stirring things up and making an a@@ out of herself.

nice to see you again!

Yes, Churches, Mosques, and Synagogues SHOULD pay taxes, because they have decided to play politics and pick candidates to support- which cancels out their tax exemptions, AND many of these religious groups are making ALOT of money and profit off of book sales, concerts (yeah, concerts) Bingo, and other money generating operations that have little to do with "spreading the message" on top of their "normal" (nothing normal about it) tithing.

The main reason why they should pay taxes- is because they are getting involved in politics, and if we can't stop them- then we should make them pay to play just like everyone else- corporations, wealthy families, industry lobbyists, all of these groups influence elections- and they pay taxes to make up for it.

churches are normally non profit organizations. (501C) even though they appear to be profitable, most churches DO charitable works. they fund and support many endeavors that contain no "return on the investment".

many, if not all churches support missionaries here and abroad. they also support many poor families in the way of monetary assistance, food, housing, etc.

as a 501C, their tax returns must show no profit. any money they "make" must be spent somewhere else, at some point.

yes, gorby, there ARE churches that have crossed the line with politics. some are obvious and blatant and some are not so much. and yes, the churches that have crossed that line should lose their 501C status.

I agree. If a church participates in politics they should be paying taxes. Last year I saw on the news a Cleveland church had a politician come and speak. (I forgot who) I was really mad about that because they are not supposed to do that, and be tax exempt.

Here is evidence that a Public School education isn’t worth much. Where to begin?
A primary reason that Churches are not taxed is because the Founding Fathers (George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and the rest) saw how government would use their (over reaching) powers to control what the Church leaders said and did. One of those tools was taxation. So the brilliant Founding Fathers chose to separate the Church from the power of the government by allowing them to be tax exempt. It was freedom for religious groups until Democrat Lyndon Johnson put restraints on free speech through the tax code. In 1954, on July 2 of that year, Johnson proposed an amendment to a bill revising the tax code. That amendment inserted the language prohibiting 501(c)(3) organizations from endorsing or opposing candidates. Prior to that time, voters looked to their religious leaders for endorsements. After the Johnson amendment a religious organization can lose their tax exempt status if they use political speech. In other works, Johnson returned the power of government to control the Church that our Founding Fathers wanted to restrict. But that is what Liberal democrats like LBJ do.

I don't have a problem with churches discussing there political position to it's members. But to have one come and speak or to publicly endorse a candidate (to me) is not right, and does step over the line.

Drey;
I agree with you. Every Church I can think of is Politically involved! Our Fathers meant a seperation of Church and State, not this crap. Talk about profit, look at the way these sleaze bags live. When they got involved in the Illegal Invader Problem, they lost me. Obey Gods' Law, but to hell with Mans' law. Tax them just like us!!

dprin:
"the churches that have crossed that line should lose their 501C status"

Great idea!
Many churches struggle to survive, do many charitable things for their communities and are a model to their city/town.
I don't think that all churches should be punished for the misdeeds of the few.
Find the few that are corrupt and punish (tax) them.

drey, I want to second dprins remark about snikers. Your better off deleting. The more you respond to "it", the worse the harrasment gets.

Not only do churches not pay taxes on the money that they rake in but they don't pay property taxes on the property that they own either.

"Democrat Lyndon Johnson put restraints on free speech through the tax code."-Hybrid Talk

They can speak whatever is on their mind- So long as they pay taxes like everyone else does!

If they don't want to pay taxes- then they should keept out of politics- and if they want to- then they should pay the taxman- LIKE EVERYONE ELSE DOES!

"So the brilliant Founding Fathers chose to separate the Church from the power of the government by allowing them to be tax exempt"-Hybrid Talk

Seperation of Church and State is supposed to protect BOTH government from church, and church from government.

But it seams you are very hypocritical on this issue- becuase you often say that "there is no such thing as the seperation of church and state"

Can't have it both ways!

Us folk donating money should be the ones with the tax right off on what we give. As for churches, they should pay tax on that free money is what I think. I am old and do not remember the time a church helped people in our community. As for some others go only a few cents on the dollar go if any to help those who needs it. Remember Jim baker who gets paid millions of dollars why is that? I'm sorry if I can't think of some other names memory not what it was I will ask my son when he come visit to help remember more names. I do know the church the popes belong to is rich and has their own city and money and big airplane in Rome. Why is that if they non profit? I think it is wrong for people of God to do what they do with all that money and be free of the tax man when poor people like us pay tax and give them what little we have.

Every war I remember have something to do with religion. why and why do we die in war and pay tax money for war if they have to do with religion and churches never pay tax. I wonder how much money our country would have if they did pay tax like we do.

One thing I do know, If the churches are taxed, Earnest Angely is in big trouble. He lives like a maharajah, flies all over the world in a 747 that he owns, under the protective canopy of the church. I have a segment on my` newsroom entitled " Evangelists, Living Large ". If you haven`t already read it, you may want to.

He is another one and I remember another man who travel the world with a 100 person staff and stay in $10,000 a night fancy top of the line hotel all billed to his church. He also fly with his own tailor and chef. I wish I could remember who name it was on 60 minutes a year ago. He has a foreign accent short with dark hair and is on TV all the time in real fancy fine suits. The story also said he was worth over 100 million.
