Use the Public Library, (movies, books, cd's, cassets, etc.) also you can have a picnic at the metro parks there are several nice areas and the gas use is minimal.  Not free of course, but we all have to eat and picnics are relatively inexpensive.  There are also some nifty places to shop.  Save-a-lot, Marcs, Aldi's (don't for get the quarter for the cart...)  Anyway, I am starting this in hopes that people will add their ideas and suggestions.  Dave

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is free on Mondays.
The Art Museum is free (unless you want to see a special travelling art show - usually a fee for those.)
Want to hear your favorite group but can't afford the ticket? If they are playing at the Plain Dealer Pavillion in the Flats, you can just go down and sit anywhere in the Flats along the River or on the Superior Viaduct and listen for free.
Subscribe to a free issue of "The Emerald Necklace", a publication of the Cleveland Metroparks. Each month will be plenty of listings of free, educational, fun programs for adults and children, at various Metroparks locations.

OK.. Is it just me or is this pathetic??? Dave~ Great idea to start a blog in hopes of tips/ideas to save money. It's not your blog I'm ticked about BUT the whole concept of our families having to shop @ second hand grocery stores like Aldi's to get by on our allowed budget!!! Craziness :-0 I still refuse to buy Erio's instead of Cheerio's!! Don't get me wrong, thank goodness they have these stores available however my nutrition is much more important... but maybe when gas is @ $6.50 a gallon I will have not other options but to bite the bullet :-(

You'd be surprised at who shops at Aldi's, Lucky. I've never shopped there because there is no Aldi's close to me, but I know people who can well afford to shop for name brands, yet they shop at Aldi's! It's a matter of finding what products you like and don't like.

Lucky, a great place to go is St. Malachi's food store near W 25th and Detroit. They sell donated expired non-perishable foods. It's great. And Lucky, I would like you just once, to eat a third world meal to appreciate our over abundance of food. You might lose some weight.

Please. I am only looking for suggestions for people, who are like me, and wish to save some money during these harsh times. Comments regarding personal feelings are unwelcome. As to second hand stores, I shop there too and have purchased some very excellent bargains. I also met a millionaire(he says) who also buys at these. To each their own. I have used Aldi's and didn't like the food or the cash only experience. Also there was some confusion I had with the carts, nearly stole one from a old man, till he courteously explained I owed him .25 cents, I was willing to give him a dollar but he refused it. The sign had faded and was unreadable or I would have known to put a quarter in the cart... Still, I use Save a lot and it is ok, I don't buy everything there but have found breakfasts and some lean cuisine's that I like.
Thank you to the person(s) who gave some helpfull hints. Dave

Oh, and as to buying foods that are past their expiration date, I don't think buying those is a good idea. I wouldn't feel comfortable eatting anything that is past the expiration date.
My mom fed me, my brother and my dad on a very small budget. We ate like kings. She knew how to clip coupons, find sales, and stretch her money. She also knew how to cook, which allowed her to stretch the food a bit, roasts, soups etc... I miss that. I can't cook to save my life and am gratefull for microwave technology else I'd find it difficult to eat...Dave

C'mom Dave - home made soup is so easy, a child could do it. Just heat up a large pot of water and ADD STUFF! Seasonings, vegetables, meat, etc. Cook for two hours. Boil some noodles and add at the end. Simple as can be.

OMG! My mom plans her meals out a week in advance and eats at EXACTLY the same time. Woe to ANYONE who upsets this schedule, or they will experience "The Wrath of Mom".

BTW ricky - when you're too old to have sex, work, play and enjoy life in general - all that's left is worrying about where or when your next meal is coming from.

Ok, I definatly have to say that at this point in time the majority of us probably need to save money where we can, hell, I know I do, so I have become the "thrify" shopper, I clip coupons and watch for sales. The majority of my shopping is Giant Eagle not just for the fuel perks but because I just can't buy frozen or dairy products at save a lot. I have been in there a few times and gotten boxed stuff and some produce, tomatoes, onions, and there is no difference but a few cents here and there. I have a store called dollar paradise not to far from me and they have everything!! so I get pasta noodles and chips and pop from there if they aren't on sale at GE. Its hard though and you really gotta watch for the sales cuz the prices are getting crazy!

Sofakingdabest~ Ridiculous name #1 & #2 I'm not fat by any means!!! Anyway, my entire comment revolved around the struggle families are going through @ the moment with the economy! I live in the USA & I've grown accustom to many of the finer things such as "nutrional foods"! No possible way would I eat expired foods, my body is a temple & I refuse to provide it with garbage. & I can't in my wildest dreams imagine that a millionaire would prefer packaged spam vs fresh real meat???!!!!

My local library carries a lot of new released dvd's as well as free internet use! In passing I will sign up for free shampoo, toothpaste, deoderant samples via internet. The small sample bottles are great to keep @ work! & FYI: From today until Aug. 17, all 20 of the Panera Bread locations in central Ohio will give customers a free breakfast sandwich if they bring in at least one nonperishable food item, preferably a breakfast one, to donate to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. I LOVE Panera Bread!!!

I think we are in the midst of a major Depression and gasoline prices may be a rallying call for some, but they are only the tip of the problem. Too much credit, easy mortgages, bankruptcies, a lax work ethic that is still common and bad decisions by several levels of politicians are the reason.
The millionaire bought clothing from second hand stores. Like me, he found good clothing, some with tags still on them, at greatly reduced prices. I don't know or care where he bought his food. I too feel that past expiration date items should not be eaten.
Other peoples feelings(?). It is difficult to accept change for some people. As to the economy. The economy has always had a rise and fall to it. I have always contemplated the conspiracy theory that the ultra rich do this to us, to prevent others from becoming millionaires. After all the more people with money, the less that money is worth.
More about peoples feelings... Names, or any other choices and how we feel about them are not important. Really. Obviously the person taking that name or making any decision which anyone has problems with; felt that the name or decision was good for them. I really am not interested in knowing how others feel about such things. Seems petty to me.

Soup. Well, I have problems boiling water. So yeah, soup and anything else that requires cooking, watching, takes time to prepare, makes a mess and creates garbage that I have to take out is a challenge for me. Bless all those who have no problem with it, may it always be so.
For those interested in bible quotes: I think it is in Corinthians (1 or 2) "The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit..." There is some real good advice in holy books, like the bible, torah, holy quran', etc... well worth the read. Good advice for hard times and good stories of how people coped with difficult times for those with the imagination and wisdom to actually see it.
However; most of these books speak of having consideration for others, treating others as we would have ourselves treated. Showing compassion and love to others.
An, all 'dis is off da' topic. Ya know...

It would appear the above site is gone. Sad. it also appears I am hogging this forum/blog. Sorry. Just wanted a place where people could look for some folk wisdom and tips on how to save money and stretch the money they have. Thanks to all who replied. Maybe others who know stuff but didn't choose to reply may decide to join in? I hope so! Dave

I am a US Navy veteran and belong to a local VFW post. I support our troops and their families. Not just with empty words. I write our president at President@Whitehouse.Gov when I read articles concerning these kids and their families. I offer advice to our president too. Please, write him to assist these kids when you read of them receiving bad water and food, and when they lack appropriate safety equipment. They need our help. They need to be represented by more people than me. Write and email your other politicians too. Don't wait. And vote, and make sure your vote counts!
