How much oil is there in the world?

Current proven reserves are estimated at 1,295,000,000,000 barrels. Current world consumption is about 35,000,000 barrels a day. This means that there are around 100 years of oil left on the planet, assuming no other oil is found as both proven and retrievable, and demand does not increase.

Certainly demand will increase, as developing nations, notably China, India, Latin America and Russia clamor for their share, so a good estimate is that there are about 50-70 years worth of oil on earth.

What this means is, we have 50 years to perfect solar, fuel cell, nuclear, and other forms of renewable energy. These sources, with the exception of nuclear, are still in rather embryonic phases, and much more research is required. Contrary to public myth, progress is well under way under the Bush administration, and remarkable milestones have been reached in all areas, especially nanotechnology and materials research, but it will take more time to perfect these technologies. How much time? Probably 30-40 years, tickling at the cusps of the end of world oil reserves, so things look right on track for a methodical transition to non carbon based energy sources over the next several decades.

Indeed, the greatest threat to mankind is not Global Warming , but overpopulation.

With the world population projected to reach 9 billion by 2020, more people means greater demand and strains on resources. Even if, or when, all the oil in the world is burned, the effects on the environment will be calculable, but fully tolerable. In any event, the Global Warming dilemma solves itself, as we will simply will run out of oil before it can accelerate into intolerable consequences, and nuclear and solar, wind, space based, etc. will, and must, supplant coal as a primary source of generated electricity, albeit in a sober, methodical progression.

That is assuming that current world consumption of oil remains stagnant for 100 years, when in the last 100 years it has only risen over time.

Meaning that if every year current oil consumption continues to climb, the time we have left diminishes, so most estimates have us running out of oil in 50 to 70 years.

But as the amount of oil goes down, the violence and rush to secure the last deposits could prove catastrophic.

We need to get on top of this now, with alternative renewable energy sources supplanting oil with massive funding projects.

We are on top of it now, but quantam leaps in research just do not happen.

Imagine back in 1935, if the public demanded that an aircraft capable of carrying 500 people be built. Of course it could not, with 1935 technology, at least. But by 1965, it had become a reality (the Boeing 747).

The two areas that need to mature today are materials research and nanotechnology. Once these have been brought to fruition, building better energy systems will be much easier, though still not easy. For now carbon based fuels will have to do, simply because there is no substitute for the high mass vs. power density ratio, ease of transport, skill in refining and established dispensing network as oil and coal. Hi tech solutions are well under way, and will come in time. In the mean time, it would be best to keep the world population down.

I would never believe a Conservative such as yourself would support population control.

I'm all for it, depending on how its done! If its done with a system of rewarding people who have less children and volunteer to have themselves sterilized for tax credits, or some financial incentive to do so, along with an information and awareness campaign, that would be fine.

But as far as forcing people to not have children, I don't see how we can do that and be an ethical society.

It is true that population plays a big part in polution and air/water quality, and quality of life in general. But so to does the ability for people to raise a family together. Its not an easy problem to tackle without breaking our values.

This is by far the best post I have read on this site something that I have been trying to say but couldn't find the right words.

We have the thoughts and the will power but the technology is a bit slow, but has been growing at a rapid rate, I thought it would take about 50 years, but technology has been. moving fast in the past 20 years.
My dad remembers when they had shows with ships flying to the moon when he was a kid and then they did it in the 60's.

We must still drill and use oil until alternative renewable fuels are perfected, and this is something we all must agree on.

The 'standard' in 1908, a mere one hundred years ago, was steam engines, coal boilers, even sail ships to some extent, horse and buggy, and very few cars.

50 years from now, the gasoline engine will have gone the way of the steam train and the horse and buggy. Truly amazing.

My grandad had a sill for more than 80 years and could run the shine in his model A. with that fuel that A went from 0-50 in 8 seconds. I still have wind burn from riding with him.I used to like smelling the tail pipe too. no hydro carbons and what a buzzz.

pablo....do those figures include the massive amounts of government surplus vasoline we presently have stored off the coast of san francisco?

That is a safeguard. In case of the next big earthquake, to ensure that the population gets it`s s_ _ t packed and exits quickly. ......LOL !

Pablo,

Check out this video that Chuck Norris did (go to Digg.com & you'll see Chuck Norris' response to drilling for oil). There's a comment by a blogger who calls himself Michael Mooreon which caught my attention. (Funny name eh?)

Ricky, now who helped you store all that Vaseline off the coast in Frisco? Was it a MyFoxCleveland blogger? I would think that's environmentally irresponsible and dangerous. How did you go in under the radar Ricky...did you dig a passage to Frisco?

I would like to add a thought here to please. I think there is more oil out there that we at this time don’t have the technology to get it yet; for instance off shore oil drilling is good but it cannot drill in water that is 2 miles deep. The Bush family was famous for there off shore capabilities, they were able to do off shore drilling in like 200 feet of water. There may be a lot more oil out there that has not been discovered. I read that the Russians have not only claimed the North Pole but they found a lot of oil there to. Coal can be turned into gasoline and China and parts of South America already uses it. We have more coal reserves than Saudi Arabia has oil. Great post, God bless from Karl.

Karl & Pablo,

I don't know if if you have ever heard this, but there is an area in the Middle East where Jewish people from the tribe of Asher and his descendants lived, during the time that Moses wrote the book Deuteronomy of the Bible. In Chapter 33, verse 24, Moses and his successor Joshua wrote what Moses said to Asher and his descendants: About Asher he said: "Most blessed of sons is Asher; let him be favored by his borthers, and let him bathe his feet in oil." Back in the 1980s, a Christian archaeologist discovered at the foot of historical Mount Nebo an area that is rich in oil. Not too many people know of this discovery back from around 1983. This area is not too far from historical Jericho in the plains of historical Moab. This is supposedly in Israel, or not too far from Israel.Current Technology makes it costly to drill, but things will change, once it gets into the wrong hands.

html if you check the above site you will see that an aircraft capable of transporting 750 troops with equipment had become a reality just ten years after 1935...anything is possible with good leadership in washington....thank the lord fdr was at the helm in the second world war....and he had defeated both hitler and tojo in four years.....and we still dont have osama bin laden.....it shames us all

Hey Ricky,

Do you have any bloodhounds? May we common folks have to go on a hunt for O.B.L. ourselves...get the bloodhounds out, then sniff him out, get a few pitbulls after him when the bloodhounds find him. Then send him to Abu Graif, and give him the royal humiliation. And to top it off, get WWF wrestler Rikishi to have a few rounds with him and give him the smelliest stinkface of all! How about it Ricky? How about it Pablo? A little Rikishi man-gravy for O.B.L.---all over his beard? Even his camels will spit on him!
