With the price of diesel fuel and subsequent shipping costs for fruits and vegetables from California and South America skyrocketing, you can save oil and money this year by buying Ohio!

Abundant, locally grown fresh Ohio produce rates among the nation's best. Ohio sweet corn, Bibb lettuce, Zucchini and yellow squash, vine-ripe tomatoes, apples, sugar-snap peas, bell peppers, green beans and crunchy carrots are available to all this summer, so save a gallon of gas and buy a bushel and a peck...of Ohio produce!

Buy Ohio!

GREAT post Pablo.
Why do people feel the need to buy things from other places that are grown right here in their own back yard?
I always support our local farmers.

Buy as much as possible and can, most last for a few years, and you will save alot of money if you can Grow your own.

If you live in the City and have empty lots get permission from the city to grow a garden, you will save alot of money and fresh is alot better for you.

Try to find local farmers that raise their own Cows, pigs, and chickens, they don't feed them cemicials, try buying your eggs off of a farmer, most sell them for a $1.00 to $1.50 a doz. alot cheaper then the store

Uh, what about winter time?

Well, people used to 'can' their own veggies in Mason jars, remember? And a root cellar kept high density crops like carrots, beets and cabbage fresh all winter.

Keep in mind that refrigerators and trucks shipping produce from warm weather states is only a hundred years old or so. People got along fine for millenia before then, you know.

We grown a very large garden and can. Yes, it takes time, but in the long run the vegetables taste better and I don't have to worry about what is in my food.
That is also why we buy 1/4 of a cow in the fall. No steroids, no preservatives, no additives, just corn and hay fed meat.

Plus I don't have to pay the ever rising costs of meat and vegetables in the store.

I love to buy Ohio produce, but...canning isn't like fresh. many of the vitamins and good things that come in fresh vegetables and fruits are destroyed in the canning and freezing process.

case in point, sweet corn (that's a staple in my house during the summer), the sugar molecules get destroyed when freezing and canning.

i wholeheartedly support the idea, but sometimes it's not always the best solution. we eat a ton of fresh fruit and vegetables in my house and even though it's a bit older when it arrives, there are times when we need to buy the south american or western products.

if you buy US, that still supports the american farmer.

Pablo,

Great post guy! Having local fresh produce is the way to go whenever possible! But I'll say this for everyone reading: if there's something that you can't get locally due to the season, and you weren't able to can it or dehydrate it ahead of time, we have some great stuff in California that we'd be happy to ship out to you guys too! Think of the oranges...mmm!!! Oh, by the way, if you heard about the beef scandal in Southern California, don't worry, that one meat house is closed, and the beef has been recalled...it didn't make its way to Ohio. No need to ask that big question: Where's The Beef? Where's The Beef?

By the way, do avocados grow well in Ohio? If not, California will be happy to send some out.

Is there a place you can go to find where to buy?

In Canton and Alliance, Ohio. There is a farmer's market called Green Farms. In Bolivar area, Burfield-Wiseman Strawberry farm has a variety and hard workers. In Zoar, Zoar market. Give your location and we will help you find a place. Also, sale barns in Amish country. Flea markets. Newspapers. Dalton, Ohio has a truck or buggy that sits onlong Route 30 advertising their produce for sale.

Stahl's farm market in Edinburg is also very good.
