I have to go to Pain Management and am really nervous on what to expect. If  anyone has gone through it, and  give me some insight what to expect? Any info would be great.  I've heard horror stories about pain management  and am really scared. One of the first things my Dr. brought up was a nerve block and he's not the first person to say that. That's one of the things I've heard from people that have gone through it.  I'm not understanding why that seems like the first thing I keep hearing, like it's standard. I'm scared about them seeming to always go straight for the spine for everything. Like I said it seems standard to do this.  I had the Carpal Tunnel releases on both hands and have nerve damage in both hands, so they put me on an RX (Lycria) and want me to go to pain management. As it is I'm not too thrilled about what I've read about the weight gain (very quickly) with this med...but I guess if it helps then what can ya do!LOL

Anyone? Help with info please links or anything! Thanks

Ask plenty of questions and don't let anyone talk you into anything you are not comfortable with. My husband is in pain all day everyday for a torn rotator cuff. No pain med's the doctors tell him to suck it up or have surgery which is 50/50 success rate. Nice odds! Good luck!

My father-in-law went to Pain Management for back pain and received 3 injections a year. It relieved his pain almost 100 percent!

Watch the narcotics. I worked in hospitals.

Pain mangmt exists for patients who require, or simply desire, opiate drugs. They give you nerve blocks in order to justify prescribing them. They have to demonstrate to the Fed that they are not just "pill mills", and are seeking a long term cure.

They make money through the blocks off of addicts that way. They don't really need the blocks, just the drugs.

My wife is seeing one as we speak. I took her for her appt. yesterday and its the second time she has gone. She has to go to a total of 4 times in a month and then the treatments are supposed to last for 18 months. She has had back pain for the last 10 years(she used to figure skate) and since the shots she has had no pains at all. Time will tell if the 18 month thing is true.

Thanks to all! One question I do have is if they do the nerve blocks should I even need anything else? I thought if I REALLY had to get one of those I wouldn't need to be put on any kind of Opiate.
Now is this true...
You have to sign a document stating you will not take any OTC meds (even things like cold meds) without their permission?
And...
I know some that had to agree to urine tests whenever they were called. This was at one certain Pain Management clinic at a hospital. None of them were "on anything" so I know that wasn't it. They were told it was to make sure you were taking the meds. I'm not too comfortable about being called and dropping everything for this.

I've only heard bad things and don't want to be "doped up" but my doc said there's no surgery that would help.

Anyway Thanks again for everyones help! I just have to give this some thought. Maybe I'll check the place out, before I sign anything. LOL

All I can say is do not become dependant on opioid pain killers. That is the best advise you can be given entering into pain management. If your pain management physician believes that is your only option (especially for your condition) than he is just that mentioned above by Pablo "a pill mill", see another pain management physician!

I work in the medical field and of any advise I have given that IS THE MOST IMPORTANT. The only way to not become dependant, is to not take these medications. Yes, they do have purpose in the medical field. When opioid drugs such as Oxycontin were approved, they were to be used on terminal and cancer patients only. Suddenly, it has become main stream to prescribe these potent drugs (Percocet, Vicodin, Vicoprofen; also called hydrocodone, oxycodone etc.) for aches and pains. Also, dentists are known to "over-prescribe" these medications.

If you take these for an extended period of time, you will become dependant and you will experience withdrawals when discontinuing these medications. No one is immune to this, it is fact.

Protect yourself and manage your own care!

I know pain - neck surgery last April - 3 titanium plates and bone from dead bodies! Also arthritic hands with numbness. Good luck!

My blue merle collie will be 10 this month. I got him at age 2. Was depressed and a lady gave him to me ($600 dog with 6 grand champions on his papers). I had him neutered and some lady almost fainted and/or shot me when I told her that! He's the love of my life. Your dog's a cutie too!

lloftus Our oldest son tore his ACL his senior year of school and the Dr gave him the option of using a Cadaver. He was freaked out lol but, more nervous about the rejection factor. Since he was able to have one of his own tendons harvested from his other leg he went with that. I'm sorry to hear about the pain your in. I hope it gets better for you.

I can see why he's the love of your life! He is beautiful. And Thank You for getting him neutered. :o)

They too have their forever homes and are spoiled rotten! Also Huge Thanks to Dick Goddard for all you do for the animals! They have no voice of their own and you give that to them. And for those who have never met Dick he is just the sweetest person even off camera. Keep up the Great work Dick, they depend on people like you for their lives! ** UPDATE We Now have 5 cats. Someone dumped a kitten and her littermates at a Nursery in Perry and a worker told us it happens all the time. At least one kitten has a Loving, Happy Forever Home. I have an idea Get Your Cat Fixed and stop DUMPING the unwanted kittens. Our new addition is worth each and every dollar we're spending to get her Healthy.
