Unity – Obama’s utopian view.
Back when GW was elected as President, I was a little worried because he had a notion that because he brought Texan Rs and Ds together as governor he would be able to replicate that success in DC. I was saying to myself, “Is he so unaware of the battle for the soul of our nation that is waged in Washington DC?”
In Bush’s first term he held out the symbolic olive branch of moderation to Liberal Democrats in Congress. Every time they took the branch and put it into the political chipper. Then the media ran stories on how it was Bush who could not compromise.
This happened far too many times for this Conservative, and I would send the President emails asking him to just lead as a Conservative, and not to worry about Liberals. But the President would respond back with words of encouragement that he believed he could find common ground with his opponents and lead from the center. But that never happened. Liberals do not believe in compromising their beliefs, they fight for them.
Soon, Bush will be out, and we may have Barak Obama as our next President. Obama also makes the claim that he is a uniter; that he will bring America together. But I have to wonder how Obama can succeed where Bush failed. Does Obama expect conservatives to drop their beliefs for the next four years, and compromise so he can look like the utopian candidate? That will not happen any more than it did with liberals and GW Bush. There is a reason we have two (dominant) political parties in America even though this latest election cycle suggests that there isn’t much difference between Rs and Ds.
During the Bush years, when there were divisions in government because Liberals in Washington refused to compromise their beliefs the media blamed Bush for not compromising enough. If Obama becomes the Uniter-in-chief and there is still division because conservatives will not compromise their beliefs, will the media blame Obama?
Is “unity” something reasonable people should expect in our government anymore? After all, during the last few years, Liberals in Congress seemed to side more with the groups who had declared war on us, than they joined with policies coming from the President. Can we expect the Obama years to be different?
