HybridTalk's Thought provoking Blog

Herman Wouk wrote a book called “This is my God” and one of my friends who is an Orthodox Jew suggested I read the book to get a good feel on what Judaism is about.

I thought the book had a lot of insights to help me learn, but the one thing that really caught my attention was Wouk’s comments on why Christian’s should celebrate Hanukkah. This book was orthodox in his views on Judaism, and still Wouk was inviting Christians to celebrate Hanukkah.

His reasoning was that without the celebration of Hanukkah, there could be no Christmas. Hanukkah celebrates the revolt of the Maccabees in 165 BCE against the Syrian-Greek forces that had been occupying the Jewish temple in Jerusalem.

The king over the Jews, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, wanted to have the Jews assimilate into the Syrian culture. Had he succeeded, there would no longer have been a people known as the Jews. All their rich history from God calling Abram and delivering them from Egypt and giving them a good and prosperous land and promising a Messiah would have been for nothing.

Then Wouk added his thoughts on why Christian’s should celebrate. If  Antiochus IV Epiphanes had succeeded in assimilating the Jews into his culture, there would have been no Jews around for when Jesus, the Christian Messiah arrived. He would have no people or culture to relate to that would have understood his coming.

This really struck me, that I was reading this book on an orthodox view of Judaism and the author gave me material on how to celebrate a Jewish holiday because without it, the Messiah would not have a people to save…

So as a Christian, I celebrate the holiday of Hanukkah, giving thanksgiving that God is able to save His people, and make His history, all for His purposes.

Hybrid;

Nice story, but you are reading way too much into it. Jews have not nor ever have or will except Jesus as a savior or the son of God! Practicing Jews actually believe Christians Will be doomed

Judaism does not or has ever believed or accepted Jesus as the son of God. Jews are not even sure why Christians do? "And God spoke all these words, saying: 'I am the LORD your God…

ONE: 'You shall Worship no man and have no other Gods before me.

TWO: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

The only claimed documented words of God are the tem commandments and Moses. God made no mention ever of a son daughter or Dog ever coming to earth as a representative for him! As soon as you walk into a Christian church you can clearly see the first two commandments are broken. I have to hand it to the Christians however, any group that can manipulate a people into worshiping a man to get to aw God and get paid at the same time in amazing. God made it clear worship God and only God yet you feel it is better to go through Jesus? Good luck, As Ricky Ricardo would say, you got some splaining too do?

God, the Man Christians claim knows all apparently does not when it comes too Christianity? God spoke and said the Jews are Gods Chosen, yet the Christians will say yea he said that but the Jews betrayed him! Right the Jews betrayed him And God could not see that coming right?

If you are referring too the Golden effigy? they did not hav

If you are referring too the Golden effigy? they did not have the Ten Commandments yet. And for those who are thinking why Jews are so special? They are not!!!!! The religion they and anyone who wants too practice it is! God said so himself!!! Revelations, A man will come too the Earth and claim to be the son of god? People will worship him from around the world? This self claimed son of God Their will be the cause of many wars and deaths or the end of the world as we once new? I will thank you too never compare Christianity to Judaism. The answers are right in front of you and you chose not to see them

The Golden Calf of the Bible was an idol worshipped by the local people.

The NEW Golden Calf and Idol of Conservative America is the Bull of the Stock Market and Mammon the Almighty Dollar.

Hybrid;

Believe it or not, we seem to have much in common. I was born Jewish, and my wife was born Roman Catholic. You’re just reversed in your marriage from ours. I remember when A fellow Jew told me that My family would never go to heaven without converting and my wife was told the same thing from her fellow Christian friend about me. That was when we both knew Religion was a bunch of horse BLEEP. Who wants to go to heaven without their family? What God would not know that? I rather be out side of heaven with my family then alone without them next to God.

Ellak – Thanks for the responses. I wasn’t looking to set anyone off by the blog. I was just explaining what I had learned from the “This Is My God” book. I’m not sure this is a good place or time to address some of your comments. We do seem to have a bit of reversal going on (SMILE).

I shared my faith with my wife and in-laws when I became a believer. I prayed for them for years. My wife and brother-in-law have accepted Jesus as their Messiah. My in-laws are close. They asked a lot of questions, and I used their Scriptures to give them answers.

But again, that isn’t the purpose of this Blog. I was just sharing a good reason for Christians to celebrate Hanukkah. Hope yours is Blessed.

And let me say this ellak - You seem to be a wonderful husband and father who would defend his family with his life. For that, I commend you! There - now we are the first two members of Fox 8's "Mutual Admiration Society"! Anyone else want to join in? Let's turn all this negative talk around and say what is GOOD about each other!

Girlscout is a VERY good photographer! Her landscape photographs have a good color range and sense of depth, and the placement of the camera creates a good aesthetic experience-there is pefect amount of balance between symmetry and assymetry.

Ellak has a very long and interesting personal history- being in the Navy, and has probably traveled around to various places and has probably met people from a variety of backgrounds, races, and religions and that helps explain his tolerance for difference as a virtue.

Polarbear is young and potential idealist (which is a good thing in times of apathy) We don't know much about him personally except that he graduated from high school and is interested and engaged in politics and The Struggle for progress and positive change. He has a good sense of what visuals to pick for his posts.

I have no doubt that that a few will claim they never seen it! This way I can allow them to see who they blindly support
