Democrats and Republicans are more alike than they think.  Let's look at two different issues with the parties holding equal (yet opposite) views:

Social Security

Democrats:  It's fine, we just need more $$ to insure it.

GOP: We need to take it in a different direction, or there will be nothing left when our children and grandchildren grow old.

Oil/Energy

GOP:  It's fine, we just need MORE OIL to keep the prices down.

Democrats: We need to move in a different direction less dependent on (& ultimately free of) oil, or there will be nothing to draw energy from when our children and grandchildren grow old.

Personally, I agree w/ the GOP on Social Security, which by all figures that I've seen will have a problem once the boomers start to live into their 90s.   This affects me personally as a Gen Xer, as I watch a fair amount of my paycheck disappear into this chasm of retirement account, wondering how much/if any of it that I'll actually see.

I agree w/ the Democrats on the energy debate.  I don't know how much oil is still buried w/in the earth, and I don't know for sure how much global warming is caused by the oil we are burning....but why NOT find a cleaner (and ultimately MUCH CHEAPER) source of energy?  The U.S. should take the lead and create better technology.  We import everything else nowadays, how about creating something of value that only we can make for a change?

Am I the only one who DOESN'T follow party lines issue for issue?  I know I'm not, but some of you "regulars" are so predictable, it's ridiculous.  You know who you are.  Keep letting the parties decide your stance on, well, everything, and we'll continue to watch them dominate the political world to the point where logic and common sense are thrown out of the picture altogether.

I've been dealing with this so much lately. I am not a typical democrat and to be quite honest when i was talking to my boss the other day she assured me that i was republican.lol. I consider myself to be to nice to be a republican..lol..I hear what your saying though some people on here seem to follow their political party to a T and i was wondering if there were more people out there who felt like me, you couldn't possibly tell me that in order to consider yourself to be in a certain party that you have to think a certain way all the time.

That's why I'm willing to listen to Pickens Plan, even though he is a Republican Oil Man and I am a Democrat. I'm open to any new energy sources that will make us Masters of our own Energy Domain! (Little joke for all you Seinfeld fans!)

Girlscout, you're one of the more "fair-minded" posters that I see, but I WILL say that a Democrat listening to Pickens' plan isn't much of a stretch, as he agrees much more with the Dems' stance on the energy debate.
I know what you mean though.;-)

I'm not "party line" myself you guys. I'm not crazy about McCain but I like him better than Obama.

I liked Huckabee ALOT! and the GOP didn't

I don't think anyone is totally one or the other.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on these points. I thought the Republicans want to privatize social security? If this is true you can bet it would go to Haliburton or China or some other dues paying lobbist organization that is the direction they want to go.If this happened I wonder just how much those who need social security will have to live on? I also heard the Republicans want to raise the age to receive social security this is also their direction. If this is true how many of you Gen X's will live long enough to draw it? With the high gas prices, home foreclosure, jobs going over seas, high food cost, bad medicine with no government oversight, poison food, lead based products from China, faulty steel from China etc. etc. we will all die from stress before we can collect it. The only people who will be left to collect the social security will be the rich and they won't need it. The next thing we will hear is that the Government wants to use the Social Security funds to pay off the National debt because of the surplus that has grown in the fund.

This is my cynical opinion and its not based on politics, its based on the leadership for the past 7.5 years

Mommiegrandma: NEWSFLASH: The Republicans DO want to privatize Social Security, which means that YOU get to CHOOSE where your investment goes.
As far as the retirement age, BOTH parties have agreed that the retirement age needs to be raised gradually as life expectancy increases. This isn't a Republican or a Democratic ideal.

One more note to remember: Not that Bush WOULDN'T pass them, but NAFTA and permanent free trade w/ China were signed into law by President William Jefferson Clinton. Write that down.

"if this happened I wonder just how much those who need social security will have to live on?"

people will get out of it what they put into it for the most part.

that's the beauty of privatization of SS, everyone chooses.........and lives with their own choice.

the dems don't want this, god forbid! people actually make their OWN choices and live with them? oh no, can't have THAT now! when the liberal left is done with us "little people" we won't have ANY choice in ANYTHING because the liberals all think we are ALL too stupid to think for ourselves.

I guess if the people will be happy with this choice then so be it. What happens to SS does not affect me at all.

I just hope we don't run into situations like Enron and people lose all of their money or their investments are mishandled.

I wish for the best possible situation for those who need SS.

I think Social Security should be privatized too. I trust my own financial abilities.

Married father of three. I love sports, nature, most types of music, and I'm an aviation enthusiast. I'm a moderate-thinking no-nonsense kind of guy who HATES excuses. I can't stand most of the Hollyweird pop cultural garbage being spoon-fed to this country. I'm frustrated by people who can name every American Idol finalist but have no clue who the Vice President of the U.S. is, and I'm bothered by the "Get out and Vote!" campaigns that want to send these space cadets to the ballot box! Did I mention that I like dark humor and sharp sarcasm?
