The Voice of Reason

Since some bloggers can't seem to figure out how to allow comments in their discussions, I'll open my own discussion on this hero-of-the-left and what he really represents.

Ramsey Clark, the founder of Act Now to Stop War and End Racism, or ANSWER, is a self-proclaimed socialist who just can't get enough of bashing anything & everything that has to do with the current administration.  Fair enough; whatever floats your boat, but let's take a really quick gander at this guy's recent track record.  Aside from promoting rallies that allegedly call for peace, he volunteered to serve on Saddam Hussein's defense team.  Hmmm....  This man wants to STOP war and promote PEACE, and he wants to associate himself with a man who started at least two major wars and wiped out hundreds of thousands of his own people because of their heritage and/or religious differences???  Sounds a little (okay, A LOT) hypocritical to me.  Remember Slobodan Milosevic, the "Butcher of the Balkans," who decided that parts of Yugoslavia were due for "ethnic cleansing?"   Clark attended his funeral and praised Milosevic.  More hypocricy.   Mr. Clark also visited North Vietnam in the early '70s (1972 I believe) while the U.S. was at war with them.   Don't give me the "free speech" argument crap on this one.  I don't know if he posed for any pictures near anti-aircraft missiles (the same ones fired at U.S. planes carrying 1 or 2 of America's sons) a la Jane Fonda, but there's quite an odor coming from his portfolio, if you ask me.  I don't care if you're conservative or liberal, the hypocrisy here is blatant.  Any true peace activist should question him about these stances, but most of them are on the same political team, so these "inconvenient truths" are pushed aside, hopefully to be unnoticed by the American public.

If you're a peace activist, good for you.  This guy stands no more for peace than the very administration that he despises, and it's time for someone to uncover his true motives.  If you want to make the claim that he was merely making sure that Saddam got a fair trial, you are purposefully denying truth. If you lie with dogs, you get fleas.   The Bush administration has a record that is FAR from clean, but the vicious direct opposition is just as soiled.  Don't be fooled for a second.

(Let me have it, Gorbash)

To think this guy was Attorney General at one time!! Thats SCARY. I'm hard pressed to find one piece of good info on this man..

The life and career of Ramsey Clark has been marked by the former Attorney General's inseparable relationship with the anti-war movement. Over the decades, Clark has consistently condemned American foreign policy and its related military campaigns, from the Vietnam War, to the Iraq War, to the broader War on Terror. Conversely, he has backed groups, nations, and individuals with anti-American and even terroristic agendas. Among the notable recipients of Clark's support are the following: anti-war protestor Philip Berrigan, who fire-bombed a military recruitment office in 1968; Libya's Moammar Qadaffi; the Palestine Liberation Organization; Yugoslavia's Slobodan Milosevic; the Communist-driven Workers World Party (WWP); the 1993 World Trade Center bombing conspirator Sheik Rahman; and Saddam Hussein.
Great guy huh?

That's what I don't get. You can be a far-lefty and a socialist, and even be against the war on Terror and still have noble intentions IMO. But this guy's rap sheet is horrendous, and he's won AWARDS like the peace award named after Ghandi????? If that doesn't absolutely REEK of pure political croneyism among these groups that nominate and select award recipients, then I don't know what does!!
I'd bet a dollar or two that he has Hugo Chavez and Kim Jong-Il on speed dial as well. More human and civil rights tragedies for him to praise.

I hope the lack of comments here doesn't mean that nobody's reading this. Most people don't understand who Clark really is. Whether you're conservative or liberal, this guy's actions should be IN THE VERY LEAST a little disturbing.

I hate to admit it, erock, but I did not respond because I really did not know or hear much about this person. (Also, I am busy packing for vacation, so not a lot of time to get into long, blog responses)!

Hey, that's o.k. That's what I posted for. I'm glad you didn't pretend to know all about him like some people around here.

Have a great vacation! (Where to?)

I worded that poorly. I wasn't referring to Zeeball's post. He obviously knows about Clark (I forgot all about the WWP). I meant some bloggers who chime in without knowing the facts that they think they know.

A quote that I made up (Forgive me if someone else thought of it first):
"I'd rather KNOW that I don't know than THINK that I do."

Most people who follow the news have heard of ANSWER, but practically noone knows anything about Clark. It's not a campaign of strictly non-partisan concerned citizens who stand for peace and equality. Many of the members may have noble intentions, but their leader has some serious political character flaws IMO.

I'm a little surprised that Gorbash hasn't commented, even if he agrees.

Really not sure who Ramsey Clark was, as I was in High School when he was Attorney General and was apolitical during that time.

I am vaguely aware of the ANSWER group, but am not a member, but I'll see what it's stated mission and goals are.

Many of the things you point out are distrubing, but as far as posing for pictures in the 70s in North Vietnam, that does not bother me because those anti-aircraft weapons are Defensive weaponry meant for self defense of that nation, and the United States had no business in Vietnam, and Gulf of Tonkin was trick like WMDs of the Bush Admin to justify escalation and invasion.

One would be wrong to assume that all anti-war movements/groups are pacifists. In fact only a minority of anti-war groups oppose ALL war, most agree that on rare occasions and in Defense use of force can be justified.

For instance, there are many groups that oppose the War in Iraq, but not the War in Afghanistan

Many traditionally anti-war groups did not oppose WWII, but they did oppose WWI because it was a bad decision.

Some groups in the 60/70s opposed all wars, but many said that it was justifiable for the defensive war of North Vietnam to fight off bombing raids and invasion into Vietnam.

Oh, and it was very foolish by the way of President Bush to use the analogy of Vietnam to Iraq, because that will end up backfiring on him.

We would NEVER have won in Vietnam, if we had stayed another 5 to 10 years we still would have pulled out only more people would have ended up dying, and the Vietnam memorial would be 8 times as big as it is now. It was wrong to become involved in that country and its own civil war and we paid a heavy price for that mistake. Iraq is in many ways similar to that conflict, but in others different.

Gorb: I agree with your assessment of Vietnam and with the criticism of Bush's comparison. All along, the administration has been pleading with people to NOT compare the Iraq war w/ Vietnam, and now they find an avenue that suits their argument and throw it right into the mix. I originally supported Iraqi Freedom, even knowing that Iraqis didn't attack us on 9/11. I still like the idea of an Arab democracy right in the middle of the Mid East, but enough is enough. The foreign fighters are pouring in and just taunting us at the expense of our soldiers' lives. Vietnam was a bad idea from the beginning.

ANSWER held anti-war rallies when we invaded Afghanistan. I don't know if they are against "ALL" war, but Clark's track record suggests that he certainly doesn't limit his "Buddy List" to peaceful folks. I'm surprised you aren't aware of him, and I'm a little relieved that even YOU are a little bothered by some of his past dealings.

I DO disagree with you on the missile pics, but that's just our differences. I know what you're saying, but I don't like the idea of an American citizen posing and smiling with an enemy soldier during a war and then returning to his/her cozy American life. Anyhow, I was MORE disturbed by his associations with Saddam and Milosevic. Whether you supported the wars in the Balkans and/or the Iraq war, these guys are (were) hardly worthy of being called human beings, much less peace-loving leaders. I wish more people were at least aware of this guy's hypocritical ways before they tag him as a whole-hearted pacifist.

Polarbear? What? Are you really Johnny Miranda/Pablo Kielbasa?

Erock- Not very much informed about Ramsey Clark, he is probably very old and part of the Old Guard of 60/70s group, since I am not a part of that generation and Clark hasn't been in the spotlight or power for at least 7 years, I wouldn't know what he is about. Have I heard of him? Yeah, something vague about the Balkans conflict, but like I wrote, wasn't very politically aware in high school.

By the Way Erock, and anyone else.

THAT IS NOT THE REAL POLARBEAR! It's Pablo Kielbasa/Johnny Miranda.

Married father of three. I love sports, nature, most types of music, and I'm an aviation enthusiast. I'm a moderate-thinking no-nonsense kind of guy who HATES excuses. I can't stand most of the Hollyweird pop cultural garbage being spoon-fed to this country. I'm frustrated by people who can name every American Idol finalist but have no clue who the Vice President of the U.S. is, and I'm bothered by the "Get out and Vote!" campaigns that want to send these space cadets to the ballot box! Did I mention that I like dark humor and sharp sarcasm?
