This saddens me. I mean, REALLY, gives me a heavy heart.

And then it angers me to the point where I have to go outside and "walk it off" around the block.

We have poor. We have destitute. We have homeless. We have starving. We have entire lost generations of families living under bridges, in vacant abandoned buildings, out of their cars that they can't even afford to put gasoline in.

Yet - we send billions of aid overseas to help someone else's poor, destitute, homeless and starving.

Why is it - that we treat our own people as second class baggage while we send aid to feed the people in overseas countries whose own governments are hostile to us? Why did the elderly lady down the street from me have to eat cat food and cut her medication into quarters while some AK-47 toting rebel gets fed three meals a day while he pops off rounds at UN peace keeping troops? And its no secret most governments receiving our aid and/or their Armies steal the aid long before it reaches their own people.

It's unquestionable that it's all due to hidden agenda politics and a distorted belief that we have some omnipresent obligation that we must take care of other countries out of our own pockets ... even when we have the large number of starving, impoverished and needy people here in our own country. The reasons why celebrities do it is purely to keep their names in the headlines - I seriously doubt they do it "purely out of the goodness of their hearts" ... for there is no such thing as a "selfless act" ...

While I am in favor of helping others, I think we need to do it AFTER we are in good shape first ... and we haven't done that for a very long time. I want to see my tax money go to United States Citizens first ...

There are people out there who will go "We can't be selfish and only think of ourselves, it is our duty to give to others" and " we're the richest country in the world, it is our obligation to help save the world."

Why are we obligated to feed someone else when our own starve? Why is it our duty to provide a comfortable way of life for someone else while our own freeze to death in the winter?

Since we're the richest nation in the world, it appears that the rest of the world just "assumes" that all of our people are taken care of.   We all know ... this is not the case. The world now expects us to provide as much aid as is needed wherever it is needed regardless if it hurts our own people in the process. Our own people are not a concern to the rest of the world, the rest of the world doesn't care about the suffering of our own - so as long as they get what they demand.  When our own die of neglect - the rest of the world demands their shoes.

If a Hollywood celebrity wants to build schools and hospitals in other countries - that's fine if they pull it out of their own pocketbook and foot the bill entirely themselves. But I have a big problem when Hollywood celebrities lobby Congress to use MY tax dollars to build schools and hospitals in other countries in THEIR names when we need them right here! I am quite aware of what is happening in Darfur. But I also know what's happening in Cleveland homeless shelters as well.  And, as cold and callous as it may seem, I really need to feed and comfort those in the Cleveland homeless shelter first.

Why can't we help both? Starvation and poverty is painful and terrible for ANY child. Here in America there are many organizations to help people in need. In some other countries, there is NOTHING, except suffering children, who have no control over having been born in a third world country. I could not look into the eyes of a starving child and say "No", no matter what country there were from. So it's simple. If you only wish to donate to needy people in this country, then do so. I am willing to do both. I'd rather see my tax dollars go to feed and clothe needy families in other countries, then to spend it on weapons to kill them. I was so glad to see we sent aid to Bangladesh after the Cyclone hit. These people are starving! Our hungry people can go to any Hunger Center, City Kitchen, or almost any church, to get food. I don't know any rabbi, minister or priest who would turn away a hungry family without finding them some help. Jesus told us to help all the poor, not just the ones living in our country. Why? Because it's the right thing to do.

I believe that we must first get our own house in order, before we can be helping others.

girlscout and gorbash - You both have valid points of view, but before you donate, make sure your` donation is going where you intended it to go. There are devious people out there who profit by others` misfortune. Why does our` nation think we have to BUY other nations` friendship ? Shallow friendship, yes - true friendship, NO !

I don't look at it as "buying friendship". I just think it's the right thing to do.

Where's "we are the world" when you need it?

Wow I agree with Gorbash we have to do for this country first.

For once I agree with you Gorbash!

Also Dex, it angers me to see these people adopting children from other countries! We have so many children here who need good loving home. Is there something wrong with our kids? Are they not good enough for these celebrities to adopt. Maybe it's because they're not tan, slanted eyes, dark hair? I'll admit, they are so cute, but damn it, so are our children here!

girlscout - If you don`t think that`s buying friendship, try not doling out the money and see how long they remain friends !

schannel - apparantly you've never tried to adopt a child in the U.S. The waiting time can be as long as 10 years. My sister didn't marry until she was 35 and did not want to wait until she was 45 to get a child. She adopted 2 children from Korea in less than 2 years. That is HER business, not yours. And calling her children "slanted eyes" is very offensive to me, as they are my nephews and I love them very much. Why don't YOU adopt a teenage minority child from THIS country before you complain about others adopting from foreign countries? Your comments reek of hatred and prejudice. Make room in your heart for love. You'll be happier in the long run.

caseyjones - A child starving to death with tears in his eyes does not care about "buying friendship". He only wants to eat and live.

well said girlscout!! And why is it so hard to adopt in the US?, there are so many children in the system that need a good family. I always wanted to adopt children maybe i should get on the list now and by the time my number comes up i would actually be able to take care of them! And those infomercials(sp?) just make me sick exploiting those children asking for just 70 cents a day, well with all the money they spent on production of the show they could of fed thousands of children! i'm all for helping this country first and that's what we all need to focus on ! America is always trying to help somebody out we should be worrying about ourselves!

There's also the saying, "You can't take care of others until you take care of yourself.
It's outrageous how we're falling behind every other industrialized country while bleeding money for ambiguous causes like Iraq. The Founding Fathers and others fought and died to make America great and now what? We apply for a job at Wal-Mart and it's considered one of many "booming service sector careers". Those who lack insurance end up at Metro's ER where the average wait is 18 hours and that's considered "healthcare". All the while our hard-earned tax dollars are funding everything...everything but programs that help AMERICANS.

I agree with adopting here first but the system is a mess. You cant blame people for going over seas to adopt when the red tape here is endless.

I AGREE WITH GORBASH. celebs are like the cute sister that has to have all the attention. if they were sincere they would donate anonomously.
i do know a girl who adopted a korean child and as any american would ask, i asked why not american? she gave me an hour full of political b.s. why, and i guess i have to agree with her sadly enough.

It amazes me how self-righteous so many people can be. It is no one's business why people adopt their children from another country. These same self-righteous people are not running to local agencies and adopting hard-to-place children - therefore they have no right to finger-point.

it is sad though, how hard and expensive it is to adopt an american child. i am not against abroad adoption but we do have thousands of american kids living in group homes and foster home surfing. it is like the dad who will play football with the neighbor kids but never plays with his own child.

I'm not saying I'm completly against adopting in other countries, but like others have said on this post before me, it needs to start at home! It breaks my heart to see these kids here going without and yeah, I'd bring them all in my home if I could. So think I'm a terrible person all you want girlscout, but know that I AM doing what I can to help our children HERE!

so girlscout, what you are appearing to support is the easier, less expensive, less time consuming route to adopting a child is better than what it takes in this country to adopt a child born here?

yes, the adoption system in this country is probably bad (i don't know much about it) but, i believe that a person who chooses to adopt should first consider adopting HERE, and going through the entire process instead of "short cutting" to the foreign countries in the interest of time, cash & expediency. just my opinion though.

I like that dprin - short cutting, EXACTLY... no one said life was going to be easy and neither is adopting a child... but how pitiful some want to take the "easy" road instead of putting the time and effort into taking care of our own kids. Perhaps it's for the best, right?
