If there's one thing that I would say makes me frown some is when people, born and raised here in the United States, refer to themselves as "African-Americans", "German-Americans", "Chinese-Americans", "Cuban-Americans", etc.  (where American is implied as Citizen of the United States ...)

I realize that  a naturalized citizen that was born and raised in Italy ... then moved to the United States ... may refer to themselves  as an "Italian American."  Because they are Italian.  Born there, raised there, lived there for years, then moved here and became a US Citizen.  Originally, they were Italian and then became a naturalized American.  I'm fine with that.  Because it's true.

What I do not understand are current people who were born and bred here in Cleveland, whose only connection to the "old country" was an ancestor who arrived in the last century by steamship, stand up and proclaim that they're Hungarian-Americans ... "Hungarian First, and then American Second."  Why do they want to be something that they really are not?  You're not a Citizen of Hungary.  You're a Citizen of the United States with Hungarian ancestry.

They're no more Hungarian than the illegal Mexican family that just jumped across our southern border.  (In respect to illegal Mexicans - they just consider themselves Mexicans and forget about the American part.)  Granted, they may have Hungarian-born parents who immigrated here/naturalized the legal way and have a strong Hungarian heritage and may live in a close-knit Hungarian neighborhood - but if you were born in West Park, Ohio - as far as the country of Hungary is concerned - you're an American.  Not Hungarian.

I believe you should be proud of your heritage.  But if you were first born here and live here, you're American and if you want to call yourself something ... it should be "American-African", "American-German", "American-Greek", etc.

I only say this because I was watching a family friend fill out a Financial Aid form for school and she marked herself as a Ukrainian-American - even though it was her grandparents who immigrated here and she and her parents were born here (and to my knowledge have never visited the "old country").  She considers herself Ukrainian who was only born in the United States and should be given financial aid.

Yup, another graduate of our fine schools. David did not mention taxes in his blog. Not even once did he say anything about taxes. His contention is that Americans should just simply be Americans and I for one agree with him. I'm proud to call myself an American.

I LIKE MIKE!!!

rickyw - I have no idea what you're babbling about.

I'm not talking about taxes - although I do have a big problem with our tax money going overseas when we should be taking care of Americans first, *then* the rest of the world. I have elderly neighbors barely surviving on Social Security and the kindness of those of us who reach out and check up on them to make sure they have what they need and help them make ends meet. Why America turns its back on its own people saddens me. It's nice that celebrities like Opera open schools and hospitals in war torn Africa - but what about the war torn communities of Detroit, East St. Louis, and Flint? Those are our own people. I guess there's no "media hype" when you open a drug rehab clinic in Youngstown. I think it's a shame. But this is a whole new topic to discuss.

My topic for this thread was - why do people who are Natural Born US Citizens - prefer to consider themselves "Americans" Second and their Ancestral Nationality First?

Again, I go back to my friend who was born and raised here in Cleveland, speaks only English, but considers herself only Ukrainian. Not American (although she enjoys all of our freedoms as a natural US Citizen) or, at the very least, she considers her US Citizenship secondary. She even went as far as to mention that she would not fight for the US because her allegiance is to her grandparents' homeland in the Ukraine. This disturbs me ... and even kind of scares me.

People of different ancestry seem to want to "hook-up" with others of the same ancestry, thus the duel nomenclature. This is a tool for them to accomplish this.

Dave - You are right about America taking care of the rest of the world when we have people in this country in dire need.We really need to turn our` attention to our "war torn " communities and start the rebuilding and healing process there, instead of rebuilding oil-rich countries that we have torn up in the first place !

"I never use the term "African American". Nelson Mandela or Robert Mugabe ain't signing your welfare check, the U.S. Treasury is!"-Pablo Kielbasa/Johhny Miranda/Mohamed

Nelson Mandela is a great hero of the People of South Africa, it is a sick and evil thing to compare him to Robert Mugabe.

Also- your comment is very racist and demeaning to the poor.

You are a Conservative Republican

Pablo Kielbasa is a Conservative Republican
Muhamed is a pig is a Conservative Republican

Rick - If America is so tight fisted with it`s foreign aid, then why when we get p.o.`d at a foreign country do we threaten to cut off our` foreign aid to that country ? We can`t cut off something we are not giving.

Instead of wasting all that money in Iraq, we could be using it to make sure everyone has health care and to start fixing and balancing the budget, since Bush f'ed it up.

i'm probably gonna get an a@@ chewing for this one but, again, this looks to me like "i want to be considered special and have special treatment/rights/ etc when it's convenient for me. but, i want to be looked at/treated like/ etc equal when it's convenient for me too"

can't eat your cake and have it too!

Um, I think that people say that their _______-American mainly so they don't forget their roots and where they came from. It can also be a classification of race. I don't know, I don't really classify myself. I try to stay away from being labeled. I rather just be me.

good point bringme. what's wrong with just being WHO you are, not WHAT you are?

this country would be a much better place for everyone if people would just STOP being more concerned with WHAT a person is and try to pay attention to WHO a person is.

like i have said time and time again, it's character not color/race/creed/whatever it's character!
