All the whining about "can't afford it" and "i don't like the look" aside ... it's about time for this.  There was a time when people knew how to dress and didn't beat someone unconscious because they weren't wearing the "socially acceptable brand name" tennis shoes or their starter jacket just happened to be the same one worn by a rival gang to an M13 clique ... take a look at kids nowadays.  They look more like back alley vagrants and prostitutes in some schools.  Why does an 11 year old need to wear thigh boots and a skirt that's hiked up nearly to her belly?  They claim "it's an expression of their individuality" - it really looks like they just rolled out of a Waste Management dumpster.  I been to my share of third world nations, and even the most destitute of the poor in those countries torn by war and strife still have enough dignity left not to degrade themselves to what I see walking the halls of our schools today.  And some Educators are not much better either.  There are going to be many more times in your life that you're going to be forced to do things that you don't want to do  ... buck up and get used to it.  Someone remarked that the dress code was "ruining the best years of their life" ... if a dress code is all that it takes to ruin the "best years of someone's life" ... that's a pretty shallow life.  I had to go to a Catholic School all of my early years with an extreme "ruler-across-the-knuckles-if-you-didn't-follow-it" dress code and my parents were as poor as church mice ... and my buddies and I still had a blast.  No dress code got in the way of having the best years of my life.

You get a standing ovation for that post... I too went to private school, heck I had to wear a uniform, not obey a dress code... I had a blast anyway

Some people just pick pick pick until they find something to complain about... I think all schools should have a dress code since some people can't learn to dress appropriatly!

Good post.

you have to remember this is the first year that high schools have dress code. i went shopping with the little money taht ido have for dress code and most of the clothes were gone of too small.i had to get shirts with multi colors with a collar so that my son could go to school. yesterday they told him that he couldn't wear thise shirts anymore. i hope they don't suspend him . i can't afford to buy shirts for another two weeks. don't judge .

shawty123,
You've had the past five months to dress your son properly.
When I was a teen I would not have taken the garbage out in the middle of the night wearing what today's teens do. If that was all that i had to wear, I would not have even left the house to go out in public.

shawty, i think i read somewhere that there was financial assistance available for this. maybe you should look into that........also, maybe talk to the people at the school and explain the difficulty, maybe they can help. it would be better than the boy getting suspended. i'm sure it's tough the first year on some people, but i'm sure that the dress code is intended to make things better for all the kids in the long run. it certainly can't hurt to remove that whole "who's wearing what" angle from the teenagers & remove the inappropriate clothing entirely.

Shawty123;

I thought the city gave out vouchers to families that were unable to purchase the new clothing to meet the dress code? I know a friend of ours did.

School Dress codes are not enough.

Encouraging students to wear business like uniforms will cause them to act arrogant and lazy, like Corporate stooges.

Male and Female students should be forced to wear Cintas workers uniforms, to encourage a proletarian mindset and culture, rather than an arrogant white collar culture.

Having Males and Females wear the same uniforms will encourage gender and class equality.

Students should not wear ties, they should wear worker/military style work uniforms, and work boots.

schannel, i believe most, if not all schools have a dress code. the problem lies with the parents who are buying the clothing that the children are wearing that are not in the dress code. even in my kids school (which is extremely small) i am amazed at how some parents will allow their children (especially girls) to leave the house dressed as they are. even if the parents didn't actually buy the idiotic things kids wear, they still have the power to veto the "get up" their kids leave the house in. i went through it, it was rough to say the least, but the was no way my daughter was leaving the house looking like she wanted to with the top half hanging out, the middle hanging out & the bottom half hanging out. NO WAY

dprin- I agree that most schools do have dress codes and some parents do not abide by them... unfortunatly. I go through all my oldest daughter's clothes and check her outfit every morning. The biggest thing is to let your kids know what's appropriate and what is not. THIS has to be done at home! If not, they'll walk around in anything.

My youngest daughter wears a uniform everyday to school and I am SO HAPPY about it. No more arguing over what matches, what's dirty, what is play clothes etc.

Yes uniforms can be expensive! You can find a lot of good one's at second hand stores and a lot of times the school themselves can give you an idea on other places. My daughter only had 2 shirts and 2 pants for the first month and a half of school. It was a pain to wash them every 2 days but it got us by until I had the $ to buy more. Sometimes things can be difficult but you do what you can to get by.

I still think uniforms are FANTASTIC!

schannel, i agree uniforms are a great way to go in all schools. i haven't experienced it with my kids yet, probably won't my youngest is in 8th grade & the school they go to is pretty small & slow to get with the times LOL

again, we agree it starts at home....ALL OF IT. the best lessons in life are learned at home. (so are most of the worst lessons as well)

gorbash81: "Students should not wear ties, they should wear worker/military style work uniforms, and work boots."

Gorbash81 - you always find a way to crack me up. :^) The sad part about it, although amusing, the Cintas uniform comment is pretty close to the truth. I see the United States now, more a nation of Service Providers for someone else than Tier One Innovator anymore ... and that is a pretty bleak outlook.

Dress codes for schools are not a solution to the real issues at hand. The purpose of these dress codes are in place today because kids are fighting over clothes and making fun of other kids that cannot afford the expensive clothing. Why not teach our children discipline, morals and respect to others at home first! Then clothing issues would not matter? Who came up with the Idea Clothing will somehow teach our kids respect, morals & discipline? That all starts at home and not in a name brand tag anyway.

Workers create the products that the Burgeoisie find a way to work of the hard work of the producers (the workers).

By making children wear business clothes, we are teaching them to be lazy thieves who live off the sweat and hard work of the people (capitalists and capital).

We should be teaching our children to be producers of materials in industry and in agricultural (producing quality goods, and food- not sitting around talking on telephones and buying and selling the work of the masses.

gorbash - if it weren't for those capitalists, the producers of materials and agricultural quality goods wouldn't have JOBS LOL

not ALL the business owners & executives are lazy thieves........they also work their tail ends off and they have ALL of the risk that is involved in starting and growing a business.

but then again, YOU wouldn't even bother to consider THAT.........there is a reason there are owners, executives, supervisors & the like. but i won't bother to try and explain it to you.......we can't ALL be just worker bees..........even in your dream of socialism, there are "bosses" and there are "workers".

I disagree! I believe that also starts at home. Keep an eye on your kids, teach them well, discipline, morals and with proper parenting you should not have to worry about your doughter becoming a Huccie Mamma. Cloathing won't do what good parenting can't!

If this were a Socialist society- there wouldn't be Gangs or Gang violence. There would already be school uniforms, and gun based school violence wounldn't exist, because the government wouldn't allow it.

the Proletariat is perfectly capable of taking care of themselves without the help of their Capitalist Slave Masters.
