How about the abandoned house that mysteriously exploded in Akron.  Any takers on the bet that someone was cooking up a tasty batch of methamphetamine?

Or it could be the owner trying to collect insurance money.

There has been alot of that going on lately in Parma/Middleburgh Hts/Brookpark.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more coverage of it- as the economy keeps hitting new bottoms I predict there will be more fires.

News Channel 5 did a report on it at 11. They said the arson invesigators were investigating and think it was caused by a person stealing copper pipes. Someone stole the pipes and didn't shut the gas off.

Again, that's also related to the economy. I remember seeing a report about metal theft in Cleveland. They were stealing siding off of houses.

I have never seen as of yet copper pipe used for gas line it's usualy black pipe, I would lean twards insurance job or meth lab.
I passed this house on my way home from work and I was one of the rubberneck guys on the highway the news was talking about LOL.
The explosion must have been intense, it shot all the walls out about a street width, the one wall was still leaning up against the house next door.

Metal recycling is a lucrative trade, and that is a real possibility.

I work in a factory (metal stamping) I also scrap and I can say unless you have a ton or more of scrap iron and a truck to haul it your not going to waste your time.
You can carry 40lbs. of copper and at 3.00 dollars a pound you don't need a truck and that would pay for alot of crack.

Polar Bear, I know you are just saying what the news was telling you, but it would be unlikely that the theft of copper pipe would cause a gas leak. Gas is not normally sent thru copper, but through black iron or galvanized pipe. Copper is generally used for water. Just shows how reliable the news sources are!

superbrowns- Plenty of people steal recycleable metals for the money (and not always for drugs).

Plenty of people also recycle metal legitimately (and not in tons)

If someone is thieving scrap metal from a house that is not his to take, then he is stealing for drugs and NOTHING else...
PROVE ME WRONG.......

gorbash is right. It doesn't take much metal to make a buck at the scrapyard. My husband picks up scrap metal when people throw it out with their garbage. A couple of old lawn chairs, some old aluminum gutters and a trashed screen door, can make you gas money for the week, depending on the weight. You don't need tons - the price of all metals is sky high right now. Thus, lots of thievery.

does anyone on here know the differans between iron and copper.
I've scraped 500 pounds of scrap iron and get 30 bucks.
I scrap 30 pounbs of copper and get 90 bucks.
this is my point.....

I work in the cable industry. We are a contractor for AT&T, and it is a constant battle to keep our yard secure from thieves. The guys who steal the stuff are brazen. They know they are on surveillance, but continue to break in. They spend so much time and energy in stealing the stuff, it would be easier just to have a regular job, but who's gonna hire a crackhead? The one thing in our favor is more and more scrap dealers won't take telephone cable, or will notify us or the athourities when they do.

Copper is the most expensive metal when it comes to recycling. That's why so many thieves steal copper pipes from old houses. Scrapyards are aware of this and watch out for large amounts of copper being brought in. Some even refuse to take it.

"If someone is thieving scrap metal from a house that is not his to take, then he is stealing for drugs and NOTHING else..."-superbrowns

Thieves existed before illegal drugs- and will continue to exist in spite of them.

Not all thieves are addicted to drugs- anyone can rob a bank or store just for the money, just like they can rob someone's house or yard of scrap metal.

I used to go scraping with a friend when I was younger, we use to go to rich neighborhoods, they would throw stuff away that still works, lawnmowers, tv's, vcr's tillers, etc. Today in some cities it's against the law.

gorsbash; Thieves existed before illegal drugs- and will continue to exist in spite of them.

I don't know about this comment, I wasn't around.
But I will agree that it's not just drug users

rickyw, I agree with pride but if my choice is welfare or scraping, I will choose scraping. I have way to much self respect.

btw. we use to joke about the guy in our neiborhood, he drove a beat up pickup truck scraping, he came around trashday and took all the metals, 6 years later he had a brand new truck.

People would be amazed at how much money can be made from scrapping. But we don't want any competition now, do we?

My son wanted to go to Ozfest the year we bought our house. The previous owner left all kinds of junk in the basement and in the barns. So my son rounded up all the scrap metal and earned enough to go to the concert.

Is anyone aware that it is illegal to pick trash? Once it hits the curb it is the property of the city. Of course I think it's a ridiculous law myself. I see it as conserving space in the land fills, and you can find a ton of cool stuff. My ex husband used to do that all the time. He found lots of antique furniture, clocks etc. My favorite find was a box full of rare depression glass in mint condition. Oh and the most expensive thing he found was an original picture in the original hand made frame from the mid 1800's!!!!!!!!! Another man's trash is definately another man's treasure!

47 yrs. old. Married 25 years, and father of two, both kids grown and on their own {except for Baxter, our Corgi}.I work construction, and love to repair all our own stuff(home, cars etc.). I truly love our city. It,s got big city culture without big big city petentiousness. Sure we have our problems, but ya take the good with the bad. We have three pro sports teams, all of which are supported by our fans, good or bad. This city has much to offer if we all just look past the negative and see the light.
